QIMR Berghofer is a world-leading translational medical research institute focused on improving health by developing new diagnostics, better treatments and prevention strategies, specifically in the areas of cancer, infectious diseases, mental health and chronic disorders. Based in Herston, Brisbane and working in close collaboration with clinicians and other research institutes, QIMR Berghofer is home to more than 600 scientists, students and support staff.

The Support Division is divided into key departments that provide specialist support for the conduct of internationally competitive research programs and projects. The Support Division consists of Finance & Administration, Legal, Information & Facilities, People & Safety, Business Development, External Relations, and Scientific Services.

About the Business Development Team:

The Business Development Unit provides the interface between researchers and commercial partners and is involved in all aspects of business and portfolio planning for commercial projects running within QIMR Berghofer. This includes direct involvement in shaping projects, leading discussions with industry partners and proactively introducing new business opportunities to QIMR Berghofer.

Role Purpose / Responsibilities:

The key duties include:

  • Manage the Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio including maintenance of the register, liaison with scientist and patent attorneys, correspond with licensees, and associated activities
  • Develop and implement best practice commercial and intellectual property systems to facilitate the intellectual property policy and commercial strategy
  • Advise and train QIMR Berghofer internal staff on IP
  • Manage commercial agreements and research contracts on behalf of QIMR Berghofer or partner organisations, in particular confidentiality, material transfer, data transfer and research services contracts
  • Maintain contractual records and documentation such as receipt and control of all contract correspondence, contractual changes, status reports and other documents for all projects
  • Ensure that signed contracts are communicated to all relevant parties to provide contract visibility awareness and interpretation to support implementation
  • Ensure contact close-out, extension or renewal
  • Provide reports and advice on contract performance, administration and issues to contribute to decision making

About you:

The right candidate will also ideally have the following:

  • Patent attorney qualifications and at least 5 years’ commercial experience in the management of intellectual property
  • Life science qualifications (science, applied science, health-related) or significant experience working with/in life sciences
  • manage conflicting timeframes and timely completion
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly emotional intelligence, to achieve effective collaborative relationships with partners, management and research staff.
  • Excellent attention to detail in a busy workplace
  • Ability to understand or recognise issues within a complex arrangement and influence an agreeable outcome
  • Experience adjusting effectively to new requirements, timeframes, or structures

Remuneration:

An attractive salary package will be offered commensurate with experience. This is a permanent, full-time appointment.
