The Queensland Council of Unions is the peak union body in Queensland. It is comprised of 26 affiliated unions, representing over 360,000 union members.

The QCU has an Executive of 45 Officers, 12 of whom form the Management Committee.

about the opportunity

The purpose of the Women’s Officer position is to ensure that issues impacting on women and the LGBTIQ+ community in a workplace context are elevated, acted on, and addressed through union campaigns and education programs, lobbying, and through developing and supporting union and community activism.

A key objective of this role is to help build capacity of affiliates and work with other community Organisations and stakeholders to raise awareness of, and address issues impacting on employees who are women and LGBTIQ+.

The ultimate aim is to improve the lives of women and LGBTIQ+ people and to attract and retain both as active members of the union movement.

key responsibilities

  • Provide support to and assist in the implementation of plans arising from the QCU Women’s Committee and the QCU Pride Committee.
  • Identify issues impacting on women and LGBTIQ+ persons in the workforce and develop strategies and/or campaigns to address these issues in consultation with the QCU Women’s Committee, QCU Pride Committee, QCU affiliates and other QCU staff.
  • Undertake research on matters impacting on women and LGBTIQ+ persons at work, and prepare and write policies and submissions where appropriate.
  • Working with affiliates, help to develop the capacity of the QCU Women’s & QCU Pride Committee and within unions generally to engage around issues impacting on women and LGBTIQ+ persons, including developing organising and campaigning capacity.

In this role you wil:

  • Maximise participation in women’s and other programs, forums, and events among affiliates and where relevant, through community engagement, and as directed.
  • Organise and maximise participation in events designed to positively promote unions within the community and to recognise and celebrate the achievements of union members, including events to specifically recognise and celebrate the achievements of women and other diverse groups within the union movement.
  • Liaise closely with the ACTU Women’s Committee and ensure relevant national campaign priorities from this committee are pursued through the QCU and QCU Women’s committee.
  • Participate in the activities of the QCU as directed and perform other duties as directed.

key selection criteria

Qualifications:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience, is desirable.
  • Relevant training will be provided to the successful candidate.

Required Knowledge and/or Experience

  • A demonstrated and comprehensive understanding of organising, campaigning, and union education principles.
  • A demonstrated and comprehensive understanding of contemporary and emerging issues impacting on women and the LGBTIQ+ community, particularly from a workplace perspective.
  • A high level of experience in undertaking research and developing policy and submissions in a labour market or workplace context.
  • Demonstrated experience to elevate and advocate about the importance of issues impacting on women and/or the LGBTIQ+ community, or other diverse groups.
  • Demonstrated experience in liaising with a range of stakeholders and in developing and managing relationships and networks.
  • Demonstrated experience in organising education programs around workplace issues, including a proven ability to generate interest and attendance at programs.
  • Understanding and knowledge of contemporary issues impacting on workplaces.
  • Understanding and knowledge of the QCU, its values, policies, and organisational structures.
