The Role

The Lead Organiser is a key part of QCC’s core staff, and reports to the Director.

The Lead Organiser will work with QCC Members and regional conservation councils to build and coordinate a diverse and powerful grassroots movement across Qld to protect nature, and fight for a safe climate

Term of employment: 12 month position, with 3-month probationary period

Remuneration: $84,430 per annum, plus 10% superannuation and 17.5% holiday leave loading (SCHADS Level 5.1)

They will:

  • Build relationships and groups in communities facing the replacement of coal-fired power stations with renewable generation to ensure their voices and interests are heard. This work will focus on and involve travel to Central Qld and the Darling Downs.
  • Work with QCC members and regional conservation councils to determine shared interests and priorities, and harness these interests to organise member-lead statewide campaigns
  • Helping QCC members develop common projects and funding proposals for joint activities or capacity building programs
  • Support the integration of regional campaigns and focus into QCC’s advocacy, including through events such as the Ministerial Environment Roundtables, the QCC Environment Roundtables and the Evenings with the Minister.
  • Lead the organising to revitalise and develop coordination of environmental action across Greater Brisbane, including exploring new models for organising/coordination.
  • Train, coach and support QCC members in building people power, organising money and increasing their organisational capacity to take and sustain action on their campaign priorities.

Selection criteria

  1. At least two years experience in community organising, ideally by building alliances or coalition of diverse groups working with groups of organisations
  2. Experience leading or supporting social change campaigns, ideally with a focus on state government or public service/administrative targets
  3. Respected trainer/coach/mentor - with the standing to train and develop experienced activists/leaders.
  4. Experience with NGO leadership including strategy and planning, recruitment, governance
  5. Strong relational organising skills, including the ability to build relationships, and move people to act together around their self-interest. Able to work effectively with a diverse group of environmental leaders, and support them in a manner that builds trust and collective power.
  6. Highly organised with an ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, meet deadlines and manage time effectively.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to protecting our climate and natural environment.
