About the Organisation

The Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Education Committee Aboriginal Corporation (PYEC) is an Anangu-run organisation that supports education of Anangu in the APY Lands. PYEC oversees education across the APY Lands and runs a number of projects to support the education and advancement of Anangu. PYEC has a close relationship with the South Australian Department for Education.

The APY Lands cover an area in excess of 100,000 square kilometres in northern South Australia and are extremely remote, with the nearest major town being five to six hours away in Alice Springs. The resident population is estimated to be 2,500 people spread across a number of communities and homelands. Predominant languages spoken are Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara, as well as varying levels of English.

About the Role

PYEC is funded by the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) to deliver the Remote School Attendance Strategy (RSAS) for the APY Lands in the Iwantja/Indulkana, Kaltjiti/Fregon, Kenmore Park, Mimili, Amata, Murputja, Pipalyatjara, and Pukatja/Ernabella communities.

PYEC have named their RSAS strategy Nganampa Education Tjitji Tjutaku (NETT) - Kunpuntjaku. This means ‘strengthening our children’s education’. NETT Kunpuntjaku work with families, schools, and communities to address some of the barriers that make it hard for families to get their children to school.

The purpose of the Training & Development Officer position is to work as a guide, coach, and mentor for PYEC employees working in remote communities across the APY Lands. The role will involve:

  • Establishing an employment and training plan with each employee
  • Working with each employee to identify their strengths and their vocational and non-vocational barriers to enable consistent attendance and job performance
  • Supporting employees to overcome barriers through training in work skills development
  • Providing referrals to support organisations to overcome non-vocational barriers
  • Providing on-the-job training to employees
  • Developing and delivering literacy, numeracy, digital literacy and workplace wellness programs and training for employees

About you

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in social work, youth work, community services, education, career development or similar, and/or extensive experience in developing and delivering literacy and numeracy training in an on-the-job context
  • Experience and/or knowledge of Aboriginal culture and communities, and how they operate, as well as an understanding of the health and wellbeing issues, and the social and organisational environments that affect staff working with vulnerable students and families in remote Aboriginal communities
  • Demonstrated ability to assist people under stress either one-to-one or as a group
  • Sound problem solving skills with a solution focussed approach including the ability to analyse and interpret information
  • Highly developed engagement, communication and interpersonal skills that demonstrate excellent listening and observation skills and capacity to build and maintain positive relationships at an individual and workforce level
  • Proven ability to competently handle confidential and sensitive information within appropriate legal boundaries and work cooperatively as part of a team
  • Demonstrated organisational skills, the ability to self-manage workloads and experience working in a high volume and demanding environment

Essential requirements:

  • Above all, you will demonstrate honesty, integrity, diplomacy, and a sense of fairness
  • Ability to adapt to changing conditions with a flexible attitude
  • Current accommodation in the APY Lands or ability to access
  • Ability to live and travel extensively in the APY Lands
  • A current ‘c’ class driver’s licence and 4WD experience
  • A positive Working With Children Check, and National Criminal History Check
