ABOUT THE ROLE

We require a person with a demonstrated understanding of human rights and issue-based advocacy who is confident working with people from a range of diverse backgrounds and can work with high levels of autonomy. Experience and understanding of the issues affecting people with disabilities (including mental health issues), their families and carers is essential.

PWdWA’s Individual Advocate will provide appropriate information, advocacy and assess for referral options. This position will work in a small team of Individual Advocates and alongside PWdWA’s systemic work.

People with disability and/or from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander/Cultural and linguistic diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply, and personal experience of disability will be highly regarded.

Since 1981 PWdWA has been the lead member-based disability advocacy organisation representing the rights, needs, and equity of all Western Australians with disabilities. We provide access to information, and independent individual and systemic advocacy with a focus on those who are most vulnerable.

PWdWA is run by and for people with disabilities and aims to empower the voices of all people with disabilities in Western Australia.

CAPABILITY PROFILE

Education/Training/Qualifications (or equivalent experience):

  • A tertiary or TAFE qualification, or demonstrable long-term experience in a relevant discipline.

KEY CRITERIA

  • Demonstrated understanding of human rights legislation, standards, policy and resources relevant to the disability sector.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of disability services and the issues impacting on people with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of advocacy and conflict of interest.
  • Ability to communicate, consult and plan appropriately and respectfully alongside people with a disability and promote self-advocacy.
  • Ability to organise and maintain a confidential database and keep up to date records with an outcomes focus.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, communication skills, planning and organisational skills, especially meeting competing priorities, both autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Ability to provide a National Police Clearance and Working with Children Check WA.

DESIRABLE

  • Knowledge and experience with the National Disability Insurance Scheme an advantage.
  • Personal experience of disability would be highly regarded.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate must be willing to undergo a Working with Children and National Police Clearance check.

The successful candidate must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
