Introduction

AMIDA is an advocacy organisation dedicated to improving the lives of people with a disability. We focus our advocacy on the housing rights area and are engaged in systemic advocacy, self-advocacy support and individual and family advocacy.

Background

Have a Say Bendigo is a Self-Advocacy group, for People with an Intellectual Disability and run by People with an Intellectual Disability. HaSB members are people who have an Intellectual Disability and may have other Disabilities. Self-Advocacy is about giving people with an Intellectual Disability the knowledge and confidence to speak out about injustices or other that an individual or the group may experience.

AMIDA is funded by the Commonwealth government through the National Disability Advocacy Program administered by Families, Community, Housing and Indigenous Affairs.

AMIDA is also funded by the State Government through the Department of Health and Human Services as the lead agency for the Self-Advocacy Re-Born (SARB) consortium to support projects including the Self Advocacy Resource Unit (SARU).

Governance

AMIDA is governed by a volunteer Committee of Management (COM) elected annually. At least 50% of the COM must be people with a disability.

Projects under the SARB consortium such as the SARU have also established a Management Group (SMG) made up of representatives from AMIDA and our partners, Reinforce, Brain Injury Matters and stArt Community Art.

Remuneration

This position is for a fixed term from 2 March 2021 until the 14th June 2022. The position is under the Social and Community Services SCHCADS Award, Level 4, pay point 1, Community Development Worker. Payment will be at a part-time rate of $47.58 per hour for 7.5hours or1 day per week until June 30 2021.

Hours of actual work: you will need to be available every Tuesday.

The role may require some out of hours and weekend work which should be taken as time in lieu according to the SACS/SCHCADS award.

Travel

Travel, when and if required, will be paid according to award rates per KM. Car parking will be paid where the worker is required to use their own car for work purposes or for night meetings.

Police Check and other policy

All workers must abide by our police check, working with children and other policies.

Location

The project is based in Bendigo and will involve working with the Have a Say Bendigo self advocacy group. The group would normally meet at Bendigo Library but since COVID have had to adapt. It is hoped that library meetings will commence again soon. The group meets every Tuesday

Characteristics of the Position

The Having a Say in Bendigo Project Worker will support this project and work under direction from the Project Coordinator and limited direction from SARU workers.

The Project Coordinator will provide ongoing support and advice to the Have a Say Bendigo Project Worker.

SARU will provide support to Have a Say Bendigo self-advocacy group members, and the Project Worker.

Members of HaSB will provide direction for the project

Project Reporting

The Having a Say in Bendigo Project Worker will provide monthly reports to the SARU Project Advice and Support worker.

Project Goals

The project goals are to:

  • Promote self-advocacy to the people with a Disability community and invite PWD to join HaSB
  • Share information about what people with a Disability can do to the mainstream Bendigo community.
  • Attempt to break down stereotypes that exist about people with a Disability with the mainstream community
  • Build the skills and knowledge of HaSB group members.

Expected outcomes or changes and benefits as a result of the project

The project will support HaSB members to:

  • Understand their rights
  • Speak out when they are facing injustices
  • Build knowledge of HaSB to function as an independent entity
  • Connect with the mainstream Bendigo community
  • Enable new members to participate in the group
  • Deliver information to the Bendigo community about life with a Disability in Bendigo.

Responsibilities and specific duties

The Having a Say in Bendigo project worker will:

  • Support weekly meet up
  • Take minutes for these meetings
  • Respectful of people with a disability
  • Able to listen to, take instructions from and work alongside people with a disability.
  • Develop a direction for the project with HaSB members (with the support of the SARU project support worker)
  • Support HaSB to organise and run events.
  • Help HaSB members to identify the skills they want to develop
  • Support group members to build their skills in working as a group or committee.
  • Work with the Project Coordinator and HaSB members to plan and deliver training
  • Work with the Project Coordinator and HaSB to evaluate training and modify as required.
  • Empower individuals to use their knowledge and skills to increase develop confidence and independence.
  • Work closely with local service providers and provide any additional support to them to understand the project aims.
  • Improve motivation and confidence of people with a disability be more independent self-advocates by practicing the skills learned outside of the project.

Key Selection Criteria

  • A commitment to and an understanding of the human rights of people with a disability.
  • Knowledge of the disability sector, including the NDIS.
  • Awareness of or experience in disability advocacy including self-advocacy.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of person-centered practice, community inclusion, empowerment and participatory decision making.
  • Experience in working with a broad range of community organisations and government bodies.
  • An ability to develop and foster partnerships with key stakeholders.

Skills and Experience

  • Experience in event planning and organisation.
  • Respectful of people with a disability
  • Able to listen to, take instructions from and work alongside people with a disability
  • Experience in working in the self-advocacy sector and the ability to resource people with an intellectual disability, an acquired brain injury and complex communication impairment.
  • Understanding of accessible communication formats.
  • Knowledge and experience implementing inclusive and participatory practices.
  • Knowledge of local community and key stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated experience working with people with disabilities.
  • An understanding of community development and community inclusion.
  • An understanding of the disability service system.
  • Skills in time management, setting priorities, and working independently
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Competence in computer-based data processing, word processing and spreadsheets.
