The Self Advocacy Resource Unit (SARU) resources and supports the growth and sustainability of self-advocacy in Victoria. SARU has successfully operated for 12 years supporting self-advocacy groups for people with intellectual disability, acquired brain injury and complex support requirements.

From January to June 2021 the SARU will be running a COVID-19 disability outreach project called Staying Connected Reloaded. The project will offer training and support to people with intellectual disability, acquired brain injury and complex communication needs to gain the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to get connected online

The Digital Support Worker will support self-advocates from the above cohorts to build their online skills to stay connected with their self advocacy group and community. The Digital Support Worker will ensure that isolated self-advocates have the training opportunities and support they need to connect with other group members, speak up about the issues of concern and maintain social contacts. Duties will include facilitating online one to one digital training, online small group training sessions and developing accessible training resources for self-advocacy groups and individual members.

The Digital Support Worker will work as a member of a team that includes self-advocates. The Digital Support Worker will follow established project procedures and practices that are both inclusive and effective in meeting project aims, objectives and deliverables.

Key characteristics of the position are providing accessible training and support to people with cognitive disability and complex communication needs and supporting the development of accessible digital training resources that can be shared beyond this project.

The Digital Support Worker is a 2 day per week work from home position until June 2021.
