Volunteer – Mooloolah/Maroochy Rivers, QLD

The Sunshine Coast River Warriors Restoration Project Intern will assist in leading the development of opportunities and on-ground projects for our new River Warriors initiative on the Sunshine Coast. The role will include working with a variety of stakeholders and PCFML staff to identify and develop priority projects; designing online GIS maps to track project successes; researching Blue Carbon potential and assisting to identify Blue Carbon sequestration within project areas; as well as actively restoring riparian areas alongside the PCFML team and our project partners.

The position will require a commitment of ~14 hours per week for an initial 3-month period, with an opportunity to extend into an ongoing, potentially paid role for the right person.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Identifying and developing priority Blue Carbon and riparian restoration projects across the Mooloolah and Maroochy Rivers;
• Engaging a variety of stakeholders to work together to achieve project objectives;
• Utilising ARC GIS software to develop maps to monitor key project areas and track project outcomes;
• Researching and assisting to identify Blue Carbon sequestration as a result of the project(s);
• Assisting with the implementation of on-ground restoration projects alongside our project partners;
• Managing volunteers and rosters; running OH&S safety briefings; and being responsible for data recording and field gear;
• An ability to articulate our River Warriors Campaign, as well as the organisation’s larger campaigns, projects and direction to the general public;
• Contribution to media releases, blogs and social media posts;
• Providing campaign updates and feedback to PCFML staff.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skill-set and qualifications:

• Hold a Bachelors, Masters (or above) degree in a related-field.
• Have an intermediate understanding of wetland ecosystems and associated restoration processes.
• Be self-motivated and self-reliant with a strong work ethic;
• Possess a current First-Aid certification recognised in QLD (PCFML will cover this if needed);
• Possess an ability to articulate marine conservation issues in a story telling manner:
  • Relate issues to real people.
  • Know target audience.
  • Ability to articulate conservation efforts to general audience.
• Be personable, outgoing, friendly and respectful;
• Network, build relationships and represent PCFML in a professional manner;
• Have a strong passion for marine conservation;
• Be a good ‘team player’ that understands group dynamics and can attract volunteers and supporters to the project.

The successful applicants should have strong organisational and personal skills with a desire to implement their own ideas and flair. You will need access to a suitable working environment, phone and laptop. Agreed expenses will be reimbursed.
