The Culture & Heritage Specialist will work with the Heritage, Culture and Language Unit and Traditional Owners of the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura Community in order to protect and manage PKKP Cultural heritage. You will participate in the organisation of heritage surveys with the PKKP Traditional owners, providing support to the consultants and the Traditional Owners, review heritage notices and permit applications as they arrive, review Preliminary Advice documents (PAs) and reports, assist with the development of Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs) and assist with other heritage management tasks as required. PKKP Country has amazing Culture and heritage, including the significant Juukan Gorge. We are looking for the right person for the role, someone who has initiative, can work independently and is passionate about empowering Traditional Owners in Caring for Country and engaging with proponents.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in and support PKKP Traditional Owners and consultants on cultural heritage surveys, to ensure that surveys and reporting are completed to a high standard and in compliance with land access agreements and other obligations
  • Review approval applications under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 (WA), review heritage notices and other requests sent by proponents
  • Ensure PKKP Traditional Owners are provided with full opportunity to carefully consider the significance of heritage sites and negotiate avoidance / mitigation arrangements with proponents who may be seeking to impact those sites
  • Review survey PAs, reports and spatial data to ensure they are delivered to a high standard and within PKKP AC protocols
  • Represent PKKP AC and PKKP Traditional Owners in a professional manner at meetings with project proponents
  • Assist with the management of contractors / consultants who provide services for the PKKP AC Culture, Heritage and Language Unit, specifically in relation to the conduct of heritage surveys, the study of heritage sites and PKKP AC’s involvement in heritage approvals processes
  • Provide strategic advice in relation to the involvement of PKKP AC in heritage surveys and approvals
  • Assist with the development of Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs) and Social Cultural Heritage Management Plans (SCHMPs)
  • Assist with the exciting corporation run cultural mapping program
  • Any other tasks relevant to your role as directed by management

To be eligible for this role, you must:

  • Be an Archaeologist, anthropologist, and/or cultural heritage specialist with minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Have sound understanding of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 (WA), with some knowledge of other acts linked to Aboriginal heritage.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Have experience with GIS software or desire to be trained in spatial data management.
  • Have excellent level of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.) skills
  • Have appreciation, respect, and strong cultural competence particularly with Aboriginal people.
  • Have the ability to work independently.
  • Have strong attention to detail.
  • Have excellent organisational skills and ability to consistently follow-through on tasks.
  • Have demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and budget constraints.
  • Have demonstrated ability to simultaneously coordinate several activities and/or projects.
  • Be highly flexible, adaptable, and willing to work in dynamic environment.
  • Have the ability to pass pre-employment medical including Drug & Alcohol testing.
  • Have the ability to travel and work on-country as necessary, working within remote locations.
  • Have a current National Police Check (or ability to gain).
  • Have a valid Open C Class Licence.
  • Commit to advancing values and objectives of PKKP AC
