About the Role

The Senior Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Adviser supports the Director of Social Justice and Regional Engagement and the CEO in managing key stakeholder relationships, both internally and externally to The Foundation, and identifies, instigates and supports social justice and regional engagement and health equity initiatives.

The Senior Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Adviser will:

  • Lead the development, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and refinement of health equity and social justice advocacy in support of The Foundation’s equity commitment, both internally and externally. This includes:
    • Support for the quest for recognition and reconciliation, including the Uluru Statement from the Heart
    • Support the cause to Close the Gap on health and life expectancy outcomes
    • Ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples can always exercise their right to sight and good health as expressed in our Strategic purpose
  • Develop and implement a plan to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership to achieve The Foundation's role as an ally in progressing health equity and social justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
  • Build and maintain strategic level partnerships with State/Territory and National and International organisations, including eye health organisations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health organisations, and organisations/networks involved in advancing the rights and aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and Indigenous and Tribal peoples globally.
  • Actively contribute strategic, political and policy advice in support of achieving social justice and health equity advocacy priorities and activities and ensure alignment with The Foundation’s Strategic Plan.

About You

The Senior Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Adviser will be an energetic resilient person, with demonstrated ability to communicate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and an understanding of health issues effecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. To be successful in this role you will have the following skills:

  • High-level ability to build and maintain internal and external partnerships and relationships
  • Demonstrated high-level written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, and within a culturally diverse environment
  • Initiative, flexibility and demonstrated drive to achieve results
  • High level experience in areas of research, policy analysis and policy development, including project management skills
  • Capacity to contribute to a strong policy evidence base through critical analysis

Essential Experience

  1. Applicants for this role must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, identify as being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and be accepted in the community.
  2. Tertiary level qualifications OR minimum 10 years’ experience in relevant discipline
  3. Significant experience in amplifying the voices and advancing the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
  4. Significant experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and networks.
  5. Significant experience in leading successful advocacy initiatives. Including:

An understanding of the political landscape;

  • An appreciation of how the media works and where there might be a media opportunity;
  • Drafting opinion pieces and media releases; and
  • An ability to draft effective letters to political figures and key leaders.

Desirable Experience

  1. Experience in advancing the rights of Indigenous/First Nations Peoples more broadly (beyond Australia).
  2. Strong experience in international development & NFP sector.
