The Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) is a community legal centre that works for social justice by driving changes to laws, policies and practices that cause or entrench disadvantage, through strategic legal casework and systemic policy advocacy.

PIAC’s Homeless Persons’ Legal Service (HPLS) provides people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness with legal assistance, advice and representation, to protect their human rights and progress our vision of a community where everyone has a safe and secure home. HPLS also addresses the causes of homelessness through strategic policy advocacy.

• Fixed term contract to 30 June 2022, 3 days per week
• Sydney, CBD location, with remote work supported

As part of the HPLS team and reporting to the Managing Solicitor, HPLS, you will coordinate PIAC’s homeless consumer advisory group StreetCare, including:

• Identifying key issues related to homelessness to inform the priorities of StreetCare and HPLS
• Organising internal and external meetings for StreetCare members
• Designing and implementing consultation processes with StreetCare members

Ideally, you have experience working with people with lived experience of homelessness and facilitating consumer engagement with an understanding of government, law reform and policy making processes. Additionally, you have capacity to:

• Understand the issues facing socially and economically disadvantaged people
• Develop relationships and build networks in the homelessness and community legal sector
• Draft submissions to government inquiries and contribute to reports and publications
