Peter Mac has a wellbeing approach to care. This Wellbeing Model is based on a fundamental belief that the best cancer care treats the person as well as the disease. This means addressing the social, emotional, cultural and spiritual needs associated with living with a cancer diagnosis or caring for someone with cancer.

Ward 1A is Peter Mac's new inpatient palliative care unit in the VCCC building in Parkville. We're seeking a team of volunteers to be part of the multidisciplinary Palliative Care Team. The role is pivotal in providing companionship, practical support and navigation to people living with advanced cancer, their families and carers. Broadly the Peter Mac “palliative approach” aims to achieve the best possible quality of life for people with advanced illness with services that respond to the physical, spiritual and cultural needs from diagnosis, to the end-of-life and bereavement.

Personal attributes required:

  • Must be 18 years or older and at least one year post bereavement
  • A desire to support people at the end-of-life including their families and carers
  • Patience, compassion, empathetic, flexible, resource and good active listening skills
  • Highly developed customer service and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively, manage conflict and negotiate best outcomes
  • Must hold current national police and working with children checks (or willing to obtain)
