The Operations Manager will oversee the day to day operations of PAW Media’s head office in Yuendumu and in ten remote communities in the Tanami region of Central Australia.

As an Operations Manager at PAW Media, the successful candidate is required to manage the timelines, delivery and budgets of multiple grants and contracts, grant writing and acquittals, improve processes and operational systems, and provide governance assistance to ensure compliance with statutory obligations under ORIC. The Operations Manager will also maintain the asset register, oversee financial management including budgeting and cash flow forecasting, travel coordination, fleet management, logistics, diary management, and will liaise closely with the bookkeeper and auditor to ensure that all administrative needs of the organisation are met. The Operations Manager will also work closely with the General Manager to plan and coordinate the overall budget, update and implement policies, procedures and organisational direction, and will work with 4 coordinators to ensure that PAW Media’s departments run smoothly and provide employment, training and support to Indigenous community members.

This is a very “hands-on” role which has a strong governance and community development focus and requires high level organisational skills, the ability work with Indigenous Australians in cross-cultural settings and be able to trouble-shoot problems in remote and challenging locations.

This position isn’t for just anyone. It requires living remotely, calls for strong teamwork skills and can be challenging, requiring a resourceful, sociable and adaptable person to succeed. However, for the right person this is a rewarding and potentially life-changing role. The position allows you to become a part of a very special community and contribute to its growth, developing an understanding of Warlpiri and other local cultures.

  • The role requires travel through Aboriginal Lands rarely visited by outsiders.
  • Weekend and evening work will be required at times.
  • The successful candidate will need a current National Police Check and the ability to obtain an OCHRE Card.
  • Housing in community is limited therefore the housing provided is best suited to one person.

Essential Criteria:

  • Qualification in Business Administration (or similar) or equivalent on the job Operations Management experience.
  • Experience preparing successful funding applications, budget management, reporting and fulfilling acquittal obligations.
  • Demonstrated organisational and time management skills including operational planning, staff management, financial administration and efficient office procedures
  • Significant experience working in an office environment with office technology, accounting software such as Xero and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience managing staff and HR related issues
  • Knowledge, understanding and familiarity of governance frameworks.
  • A current driver’s license, the ability to travel for extended periods and available to live in a remote community.

Highly desirable:

  • Experience in community development and/or working in an inter-cultural context.
  • Understanding of working with and reporting to Indigenous groups, individuals and communities.
  • Experience living and working in a remote Australian indigenous community.
  • 4WD and manual driving experience.

About PAW Media:

PAW Media & Communications is the trading name of Warlpiri Media Aboriginal Corporation, an Indigenous-controlled media production house and accredited charity based in the remote indigenous community of Yuendumu. The Corporation’s membership encompasses Pintubi, Anamatjere and Warlpiri people, hence the PAW acronym. Warlpiri Media began life as a pirate TV station in the mid 1980’s and later became famous for its hit TV series “Bush Mechanics”. In addition to its video activities, Warlpiri Media now manages and operates the PAW Radio Network, a licensed community broadcasting service for twelve Indigenous communities across the Greater Tanami Desert region, an area twice the size of Ireland. PAW Media also manages the Warlpiri Media Archives, an audio visual and video collection built over thirty-five years that is acknowledged for its national cultural significance.

About the location:

Yuendumu has a population of approx. 800 people, predominantly Warlpiri. The community is the main service delivery centre for Warlpiri Aboriginal Lands, and it provides basic necessities for residents. Among Yuendumu’s services is a health clinic, motor-vehicle workshop, two general stores, post office, school, and police station. It is the only community in its region with a public swimming pool.
