Role Summary

Responsible for supporting the origination and management of a portfolio of impact investments that prioritise positive social impact and broader market-building efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Industry
    • Monitoring industry development to keep track of market trends, opportunities and risks
  • Opportunity assessment
    • Critically analysing business and strategic plans
    • Rigorously evaluating financial statements and projections
    • Rigorously evaluating impact theories of change, impact goals and performance
    • Assessing broader market dynamics and trends (demand, growth, competition, etc.)
    • Qualitative due diligence via stakeholder interviews
  • Investment structuring and closing
    • Developing valuation models, including in markets where comparables don’t exist
    • Selecting appropriate investment instruments and structures on a transaction-by-transaction basis
    • Drafting and coordinating the finalisation of legal documents (terms sheets, loan agreements, subscription agreements, etc.)
    • Negotiating terms and structures with co-investors
    • Drafting investment memos for Boards and Investment Committees
  • Investment management
    • Providing post-investment support to investees, such as via delivering capacity building projects
    • Overseeing reporting and measurement

Personal Characteristics and Skills

  • Strong numerical skills including financial modelling via Excel
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • High quality written communication via Word and PPT
  • Advanced online research skills
  • Project management expertise (all the way from proposal development to investment closure)
  • Professional stakeholder management skills (internal management, Board, investees, co-investors, external legal, sell-side advisors, etc.)
  • Thorough understanding of financial markets, instruments and investor types
  • Demonstrated interest in impact investing, social enterprise or related fields
  • Highly organised and methodical with strong attention to detail and process
  • Comfortable working in ambiguous, complex and agile environments
  • Highly resourceful and motivated, able to take initiative and consult effectively
  • Ability to manage simultaneous, often conflicting tasks
  • A team player, able to work within a small, professional team
  • Self-starter with a “roll up the sleeves” attitude
