International Programs & Placement Coordinator

Palms Australia

Palms Australia

Since 1961 Palms Australia has contributed to justice in global development by engaging in long-term partnerships with grass roots Health, Education and Community Development organisations who seek sustainable solutions to poverty. We prioritise locally owned and initiated economic and community developments in remote areas of Africa, Asia and the Pacific. The beneficiaries are those with least opportunity to live full and dignified lives due to endemic structural injustice.

At the request of our partners Palms recruit, thoroughly prepare and support qualified and experienced Australians to engage in mentoring with local counterparts with the aim of mutual development. They are assigned for one to three years, allowing three to six months to build their capacity to live and work effectively in a vastly new context. With the goal of localising in-demand skills and removing dependence on foreign aid, succeeding placements build on the strengths of local organisations and people.

Local colleagues assist the Australians assigned to learn language, identify community assets and build positive relationships within the community, after which the Australians are empowered to assist developments identified by the requesting organisation to foster the strengths of local people.

In accordance with Palms’ Policy and Procedures manual, you will coordinate relationships with communities and organisations requesting Program Participants. You will share responsibility for the support of Program Participants with the Assignment Support Officer.

The position is based in Palms’ Sydney office and will require a full-time or significant part-time contribution.

THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT WILL:

  • Have an enthusiasm for the vision and mission of Palms Australia
  • Put our international community program partners and program participants at the heart of her/his work
  • Build strong professional and personable cross-cultural client relationships
  • Have experience with Microsoft Office, Access Database, and a variety of communications apps.
  • Apply individual responsibilities while working collaboratively in a team

PREFERRED APPLICANTS WILL HAVE:

  • experience working for at least two years as a program participant in a community of a culture different to their own;
  • have completed or be undertaking tertiary level studies in International Development.
