The Mental Health Nurse provides clinical and mental health support for young people with moderate to severe mental health presentations including complexity and risk, with consideration given to supporting and working with the young person’s systemic supports. The Mental Health Nurse will work closely with GPs, psychiatrists and allied health staff to facilitate the provision of coordinated clinical care and treatment at headspace Sunshine.

Reporting to the Clinical Services Manager, the Mental Health Nurse will:

  • Provide co-ordinated services to young people with moderate to severe mental health disorders, including undertaking assessments and ongoing care in accordance with best practice and clinical guidelines for the treatment of that disorder.
  • Establish a therapeutic relationship with young people and significant others that facilitates the monitoring and review of young people’s mental health state and informs timely multidisciplinary clinical review.
  • If appropriate, use the Health of the Nation Outcomes Scale (HoNOS or HoNOSCA)) to measure and monitor symptoms and functioning in line with MHNIP requirements.
  • Work closely with psychiatrists, GPs and allied health practitioners to facilitate the provision of coordinated clinical care for young people presenting with severe mental health disorders.

What you’ll need

You are passionate, energetic and determined to make a difference to health and wellbeing outcomes for young people. The following criteria must be met for consideration for this position:

  • Current Victorian Nursing Registration with (AHPRA) and a Credentialed Mental Health Nurse with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN), or eligibility to become credentialed.
  • Extensive experience in the provision of mental health care, including completion of mental health assessments, crisis intervention, psychoeducation and treatment interventions to young people experiencing severe mental health and/or substance use problems, including current evidence-based approaches.
  • Understanding of the principles and issues relevant to coordinated, multidisciplinary team approaches in the provision of mental health services.
