The Opportunity

The DFV Child Trauma and Wellbeing Practitioner is responsible for providing child-specific trauma-informed support, and case management to children of women who access our DFV Services. This position will work with other DFV service staff to ensure that children impacted by DFV are provided with support that is tailored to their individual needs and circumstances. In addition the role will be required to work closely with the DFV manager to not only continue to develop this children’s service, but to ensure the service we deliver to children is provided on the basis of best practice standards.

This position will require the ability to work across a range of shifts, which will include weekends and may also include evenings. Safe Haven operates 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. The candidate will be required to be flexible in regards to working hours which will be influenced by the specific demands of the position which are based on the needs of children at the refuge.

Open Support supports the vulnerable in our society offering services that are professional, flexible and responsive to emerging community needs.

As one of its key service areas, Open Support provides crisis accommodation, transitional accommodation, case management and support services to women and their children who have experienced and/or are escaping domestic and family violence (DFV). Our crisis facility, Safe Haven operates 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Support is also offered to clients who are transitioning or have transitioned from crisis accommodation to longer-term housing. Open Support also provides holistic case management to women who have accommodation. The Open Support DFV Program assists women and children to begin the process of healing from the trauma of DFV and aims to empower these families to lead safe, independent and fulfilling lives.

Skills/Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in Early Childhood Education, Social Work, Psychology, Occupational Therapy or similar.
  • At least 2 years’ experience working with children and/or families affected by DFV and trauma within a community services or residential setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of risk management, intervention and case management skills, within a family violence.
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport with children and families and the ability to provide a flexible, trauma informed and child centred approach to service delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to work specifically with women and children from culturally diverse backgrounds experiencing DFV.
  • Experience in program development and in delivering structured activities for children from birth to 12 years.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child protection legislation and associated issues.
