About the role

  • Join Queensland's leading LGBTIQ+ youth service, supporting young people since 2003
  • This is a newly created permanent role to support our growing service
  • We are seeking a fully registered Psychologist, Occupational Therapist OR Mental Health Accredited Social Worker (must be registered with the appropriate governing body)
  • Centrally based in Fortitude Valley

As the Mental Health Practitioner your responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct initial intake and assessments.
  • Develop a care plan for each young person accessing the service.
  • Provide short term counselling services including ongoing assessment, care planning, referral, intervention and mental health strategies in an LGBTI+ affirming practice
  • Provide focused psychological strategies, including cognitive behavioural therapy, interpersonal therapy, narrative therapy or brief intervention.
  • Exit planning and development of referral pathways if further counselling is required.
  • Provide regular feedback to the referring GP or relevant key worker regarding client progress.
  • Management of confidential client files, including writing case notes, client plans and referral pathways.
  • Management of client intake, including assessing eligibility of clients waiting to access counselling service.
  • Data collection as required by ODYS and funding bodies
  • Building effective relationships with key stakeholders whilst representing ODYS in line with our values at all times

About You

The successful candidate will have:

  1. Demonstrated experience in the provision of mental health services to young people
  2. Demonstrated experience in working with young LGBTI+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities to access appropriate mental health services
  3. Demonstrated experience delivering mental health services and client care coordination using a holistic, trauma informed, patient centered approach
  4. Demonstrated ability to engage in mentoring and supervision of other Allied Health / Aboriginal Health Workers / less experienced staff and providing education/training in psychology related areas within this primary health care context
  5. Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and/or in as a sole professional in this environment
  6. Demonstrated skill in working in a primary care setting, in particular the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team with a sound understanding of your role as Psychologist delivering services for young people and their families in this context

About Us

Open Doors Youth Service has been in operation since 2001 providing support to young LGBTIQ+ people and their families. We support young people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Asexual, Pansexual, Sistergirl or Brotherboy (LGBTIQ+ Sistergirl & Brotherboy) aged 12 - 24 across South East Queensland.

It is an exciting time to join Open Doors Youth Service. Over the past few years we have been building our capabilities and services to cater for the unique needs for our LGBTIQ+ young people in our community. We are a small, but passionate team that work together providing one-on-one case work and group facilitation in addition to many other supports for our young people.
