National Women’s Safety Alliance

The National Women’s Alliances (the Alliances) are funded by the Australian Government to ensure diverse women’s voices are heard in the policy making process. Alliances advocate for the economic security, safety and leadership opportunities of women in Australia and collaborate with policymakers to inform Australian Government policies that impact women.

Six specialist women’s alliances are funded through the Prime Minister and Cabinet Women’s Leadership and Development Program:

  • National Women’s Safety Alliance
  • Equality Rights Alliance
  • Harmony Alliance
  • National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Alliance
  • National Rural Women’s Coalition
  • Women with Disabilities Australia

The newly formed National Women’s Safety Alliance (NWSA) will bring together a diversity of voices, expertise and experiences to inform policy reform to inform and guide national policy reform on women’s safety. YWCA Canberra is the auspicing body of the National Women’s Safety Alliance and the NWSA office is located at the YWCA Canberra.

About the role

The NWSA Policy and Advocacy Officer is a key role reporting directly to the CEO NWSA.

The person in this role will develop and coordinate NWSA policy and advocacy work. This includes conducting research and developing policy positions and submissions; liaising with NWSA members; and providing administrative support to the NWSA CEO, Policy & Advocacy Advisory Committee and Working Groups. This position represents a unique opportunity to influence the national conversation on women’s safety.

Responsibilities

  • Develop policy and advocacy materials and undertake research relating to NWSA’s policy priorities.
  • Coordinate membership communication and engagement activities and events.
  • Liaise with women’s safety organisations, individuals with lived experience and government stakeholders.
  • Deliver policy and government relations advice to NWSA CEO.
  • Provide secretariat support to the NWSA Policy & Advocacy Advisory Committee and Working Groups.
  • Manage NWSA communications, including the website.

Who are we looking for?

  • Tertiary qualifications in social policy, advocacy, government relations, or communications.
  • At least 2 years’ experience working in social policy within federal government.
  • Experience in writing for and managing a range of content platforms and publications including newsletters, annual reports, websites, media releases, social media content.
  • Demonstrated experience in researching and producing policy and advocacy materials such as government submissions, reports, consultation documents, briefing papers and position papers, and website content.
  • Research and evaluation skills, including strong analytical ability and problem-solving skills.
  • Sound understanding of women’s safety issues.
  • Experience in developing and implementing advocacy campaigns in both the on and offline environment.

  • Ability to work within the values of the NWSA and YWCA Canberra
  • Digital literacy, in particular CRM and website
  • A current Working with Vulnerable People Registration
  • Current, valid driver’s licence (to access our numerous sites)
  • Australian Citizenship or suitable rights to work in Australia
