Position Summary

The Regional Coordinator actively engages in policy development and implementation processes that relate to Territory and national housing and homelessness reforms in collaboration with NT Shelter staff, key external stakeholders and relevant NT Government staff.

The position also contributes to NT Shelter’s policy and advocacy platform and operational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

The Regional Coordinator is responsible for facilitating communication and sharing information between non-Government housing and homelessness organisations and various NT Government (NTG) agencies in Central Australia and the Barkly region. Occasional travel to Tennant Creek, Darwin and interstate is also required.

A core function of this role is to coordinate housing/homelessness sector meetings, recommending priorities for the region and providing specialist advice on local housing and homelessness issues.

  • Developing and coordinating NT Shelter’s policy responses on housing and homelessness in the NT and promoting these within the community;
  • Engaging with, and encouraging stakeholder involvement in, consultative processes which contribute to or inform housing and homelessness policy;
  • Undertaking and participating in projects and research around housing and homelessness in Central Australia and the Barkly;
  • Representing NT Shelter in local and national housing forums; and
  • Working to NT Shelter’s Strategic Plan by contributing to the ongoing development of annual business plan priorities, collaborating with other NT Shelter staff and meeting the requirements of NT Shelter’s Service Funding Agreements.

Selection Criteria for Regional Coordinator

Necessary

  • Proven ability to establish and maintain networks which generate collaboration, support and feedback and work constructively with key stakeholders on projects.
  • Strong meeting facilitation skills.
  • High-level written and verbal communication and influencing skills, including the ability to:
    • Prepare policy submissions, reports and content for an external audience.
    • Speak confidently on policy positions in public.
    • Develop, build support for, and promote peak body advocacy positions.
  • Well-developed project management skills.
  • The ability to undertake research or analysis on housing and homelessness issues in the NT.
  • The capacity to work independently and with limited supervision to achieve outcomes, contribute to a team environment, participate in regular meetings to share information and deliver required outputs on time.
  • An understanding of the housing and homelessness issues in both a national and Northern Territory context.
  • Proficiency with computer-based software applications, including but not limited to Microsoft Office programs.

Desirable

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and/or policy experience in the not-for-profit sector.
  • Social media skills and skills in the development of key communications messages.
  • Prior experience in the housing and homeless sector or related field; and/or
  • Prior experience in a communications, media or advocacy role.
