Yingiya Mark Guyula is the Independent Member for Mulka in the Northern Territory Parliament. His office is currently recruiting for an Electorate Officer to work in the Nhulunbuy Electorate Office. The electorate of Mulka encompasses much of north-east Arnhem Land and the electorate office is based in Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory. The Member for Mulka, now in his second term, campaigned on a platform of Yolngu Rom Ngurrungu (Yolngu Law First). He is committed to giving a voice to Yolngu people in the NT Parliament, bringing the knowledge and the law of the first nation to the Northern Territory Parliament, in order to fight for equality and rights of the people from his electorate and beyond these boundaries. The Member for Mulka has committed to supporting all constituents: across clans, both Yolngu and Balanda (non-Yolngu). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to live and work on Yolngu country with different Yolngu and Balanda communities and their leaders. This role presents an exciting and unique opportunity to learn about Yolngu law and culture and directly support self-determination.

About the Role

The Electorate Officer serves the electorate and provides support to the Member for Mulka. The Electorate Officer may be responsible for the supervision of an Assistant Electorate Officer and Liaison Officer/s depending on the organisation of work within the electorate office. The Electorate Officer reports directly to the Member for Mulka.

The duties and responsibilities of the Electorate Officer include:

  • Providing high level confidential secretarial, executive and administrative support services for the Member for Mulka.
  • Assisting the Member for Mulka with the day to day operations and management of the electorate office, particularly in the absence of the Member.
  • Assisting with general enquiries from constituents concerning a wide range of community, social and political issues.
  • Preparing reports, briefs and correspondence related to the business of the electorate, for the information and attention of the Member for Mulka on an ongoing basis.
  • Ensuring the Member for Mulka is informed of developments within the electorate particularly during absences from the electorate on parliamentary business.
  • If required and as directed by the Member for Mulka, undertaking some or all electorate media responsibilities.
  • If required, assisting the Member with the management of the Members accounts and Acquittal System records.

Recruitment is for a full-time position, although more flexible arrangements including part-time and job share arrangements may be considered for the appropriate candidate.

Salary range: NTPS AO5 + 10% in lieu of overtime
