THE POSITION

This position is an outstanding opportunity to take on a respected leadership role in the Northern Territory legal sector.

The Northern Territory Legal Aid Commission (“the Commission”) is an independent statutory authority established under the Legal Aid Act 1990 (“The Act”).

The Director is appointed by the Attorney-General and has overall responsibility for carrying out the decisions of the Commission and management of the service of the Commission. The Commission operates with a high degree of autonomy, which reflects the Commission’s role in protecting the legal rights and interests of individuals, many of whom are parties to actions by, or against, the executive branches of government.

The role of Director combines recognised legal expertise with highly developed management skills. You will work closely with the Commission Board to lead and manage diverse business areas to achieve the delivery of efficient, high quality and sustainable legal services and set and lead the organisation’s strategic direction to ensure it meets its objectives.

The Commission has offices in Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs and attends courts based in different communities across the Territory, as required.

The position’s conditions of employment are similar to those existing in the Northern Territory Public Service.
