About Council for Intellectual Disability:

CID is a peak body representing the rights and interests of people with intellectual disability in NSW. CID undertakes advocacy, information provision and projects that advance the rights of people with intellectual disability.

About the Position:

Your will be one of two Policy and Advocacy Officers in the Advocacy team reporting to the Advocacy Manager. Your work in this position will include delivery of policy, advocacy work and campaigning work. It will also include facilitating support and consultation work with people with intellectual disability. You will undertake research and contribute to reports, submissions and digital content. Advocacy campaigning will often require you to manage competing priorities and you will need to be able to work successfully to deadlines.

Role Responsibilities

  • Support the work of the Senior Advocate, Senior Manager Advocacy, Manager Advocacy and CEO in the delivery of policy, advocacy work and campaigns.
  • Facilitate consultations with people with intellectual disability to inform policy and advocacy work.
  • Undertake research and analysis of issues affecting people with intellectual disability, including coordinating advice and experience from CID staff working across the organisation.
  • Prepare reports, papers and correspondence relating to CID’s advocacy and campaign work.
  • Respond in a timely manner to requests for policy and advocacy advice.
  • Work on communications for the Advocacy and Campaign work, including e-newsletter, social media and website, in conjunction with Communications Team and in consultation with Manager, Advocacy.
  • Ongoing monitoring, recording and evaluation of data and processes to allow for continuous improvement.
  • Support the participation of people with intellectual disability in CID's work.

Essential Selection Criteria – Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrated commitment to the human rights of people with disability and the principles of participation and inclusion.
  • Well-developed written communication skills with the ability to write evidence-based and persuasive policy documents, articles and submissions.
  • Demonstrated oral communication skills with the ability to represent the views of CID’s members at forums, in meetings with government departments and other organisations.
  • Experience in successfully working to deadlines while managing competing priorities.
  • Experience working independently as well as collaboratively both within an organisation and with external stakeholders.
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Office.

  • Position is Contract (12 months) Full Time or Part Time. Hours are flexible between 8am -6pm. There is also flexibility to work from home.
  • Salary is Level 5 - Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services (SCHADS) Award. Salary packaging is available. Employer superannuation contribution is at the current Superannuation Guarantee rate.
  • Appointment is contingent on a satisfactory Police record Check and Working with Children Check.
