Are you a dynamic 3-5+ year PQE solicitor interested in gaining experience with senior organisational decision-making? The NSW Bar Association is seeking a lawyer to join its executive support team.

Our Organisation

The New South Wales Bar Association is the professional body for practising barristers and associate members, such as clerks and judges. Its purpose is to serve the public good in relation to the administration of justice and the provision of legal services. This is achieved by promoting and maintaining the highest standards of excellence among local practising barristers.

In pursuit of this objective, the New South Wales Bar Association:

  • Carries out educational, regulatory and policy functions through the work of the Bar Council, via its committees
  • Co-ordinates pro bono or reduced-cost legal services to underprivileged sections of the community
  • Operates the Bar Library
  • Supports the Bar Council in carrying out its regulatory functions in matters of professional discipline, by managing complaints against barristers via Professional Conduct Committees.
  • Supports the wellbeing of its members

Role

The Executive Officer supports the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, the President, the Executive and the Bar Council in achieving the Bar Association’s objectives by providing legal, administrative and project management support to the Association’s leadership including the Executive Director, the Chief Operating Officer and the Executive Committee of Bar Council, including the President.

Key duties include:

  • Provide the Executive Director and/or Chief Operating Officer with project management support for key strategic projects.
  • Assist the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer with legal issues, including providing in-house legal advice or liaising with external solicitors and/or barristers to obtain advice. Areas of advice are varied, but include workplace, privacy and corporations law
  • Assist the Executive Director in settling agendas and circulating papers for Bar Council and Bar Council Executive meetings, to attend those meetings and take minutes and actions and communicate and monitor the implementation of Bar Council and Executive decisions within the Association.
  • Assist the Executive Director, President and Executive to manage key stakeholders including with the membership, the NSW and Commonwealth Governments, the Courts, and other regulatory stakeholders by providing support including preparing a range of correspondence, legal, legal policy and other documents and acting as a liaison point
  • Provide legal policy support to the Executive Director on key strategic reform priorities for the Association.
  • Monitor daily media to assist the Executive Director identify media issues of relevance to the Association.
  • Assist the Executive Director as requested with the position's delegated regulatory functions, including providing administrative, legal and other legal research support as required.

Work outside the core standard hours will occasionally be necessary, as Executive and Bar Council meetings are held between 5-7pm. The Executive Officer reports to the Executive Director.

Essential skills and experience

  • Qualifications in law and holder of current practicing certificate
  • At least 3 years post qualification experience
  • Experience in undertaking legal research and providing legal advice
  • Experience with project management
  • Ability to diagnose and solve problems quickly, decisively and accurately
  • Ability to liaise with senior stakeholders and strong interpersonal skills and diplomacy
  • Flexibility, resilience, reliability
  • High standards of professional integrity and good emotional intelligence
  • Ability to navigate new and challenging areas and manage projects
  • Adept at managing own time and resources

An interest or experience in communications or legal policy is also desirable.
