About the role / Position Purpose

This role sits within the Pro Vice Chancellor, Student Experience portfolio which includes Student Success, Indigenous Education, Chaplaincy, Libraries, and Student Life and Wellbeing.

The Counsellor is an integral part of the student experience team and provides counselling services to university students as part of the student wellbeing initiatives that are part of the core ethos of the University.

The Counsellor is responsible to the Counselling Coordinator and accountable to the Deputy Director of Student Wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing a confidential and ethical counselling service to university students and where appropriate referring students to external agencies to support long-term counselling objectives.
  • Providing critical incident/emergency counselling appointments across the University, including a diverse range of counselling issues and mental health disorders.
  • Collaborate and liaise with other departments to provide strategic and specialist input on development of University mental wellbeing, safety, pastoral care, mediation and other learning support for students.
  • Assist in the development and review of procedures to meet best practice, including preparation of ad hoc reports.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, case notes and associated documentation.
  • Participate in performance management, clinical supervision, specialised relevant training and engaging in a team-orientated approach to achieve best practice.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  1. Supportive of the Objects of Notre Dame as a Catholic University.
  2. Postgraduate qualifications in psychology or counselling with extensive assessment and counselling experience; Possession of registration with a relevant professional body such as AHPRA and/or Australian Counselling Association (ACA) – level 3 and above; and/or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA)
  3. Ability to understand, respond and provide a range of counselling services tailored to young adult and mature-age adult student needs that is evidence-based, while maintaining confidentiality and ethical practice.
  4. Experience and confidence in delivering workshops, training and facilitating groups such as Client-Centred and Short-term Solution Focused Counselling, CBT, ACT and Mindfulness at both the individual and group level.
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability build successful relationships with other departments and achieve consensus with senior levels.
  6. Highly developed relational skills including the ability to gain confidence, influence and engage with a wide range of internal stakeholders.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary issues in the higher education sector.
  8. Excellent time management and organisational skills with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
