About the NLC

We are responsible for assisting Aboriginal people in the Top End of the Northern Territory to acquire and manage their lands and seas. Our vision is to ensure that Aboriginal people benefit socially, culturally and economically from the secure possession of their land, waters and seas.

About the Role

Lawyers provide legal advice in relation to the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (ALRA), the Native Title Act 1993 (NTA) and other legislation and laws affecting relevant Aboriginal peoples and groups in the Northern Land Council’s (NLC) jurisdiction.

The Community Planning and Development (CP&D) Lawyer provides legal services to the NLC’s CP&D program, which supports Aboriginal groups to plan, fund and undertake their own development projects using an empowerment-based model.

Responsibilities

  1. Act as the legal representative of:
    (a) The NLC in the negotiation, drafting and implementation of various contracts, including construction contracts and service agreements;
    (b) The NLC in the negotiation of exploration and mining agreements under the ALRA and the NTA;
    (c) Aboriginals claiming to have a traditional claim to land or compensation in respect of an area of land or waters within the area of the NLC;
    (d) Aboriginal people and groups and, where relevant, Aboriginal Land Trusts, Prescribed Bodies Corporate and other Aboriginal associations in relation to the use, management, occupation or development of their lands and seas (including uses for national parks, tourism, public services, townships and commercial enterprises);
    (e) Aboriginal people and groups in relation to the protection of sacred sites; and
    (f) Aboriginal people and groups in relation to fulfilling their aspirations for self-determination and social,
    cultural, economic and environmental development.
  2. Provide legal advice on matters in connection with the general administration and management of the NLC, Aboriginal Land Trusts, Prescribed Bodies Corporate and other Aboriginal associations.

About you

  • Have a significant demonstrated knowledge, understanding and respect of Indigenous Australian culture, customs and society and the ability to gain and maintain credibility with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, communities and organisations.
  • Qualified legal practitioner admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ post admission experience in legal practice (and an outstanding candidate of lesser post admission experience may be considered).
  • Experienced in commercial law and drafting commercial contracts.
  • Experienced in providing written legal advice.

Remuneration and Benefits:

  • Full-Time Permanent role
  • Location: Darwin
  • Salary: $54,905 - $125,190 per annum
  • Allowances, e.g. district and airfare allowances
  • FBT exempt salary packaging benefits pay
  • 13% superannuation contribution
  • 5 weeks annual leave & 17.5% annual leave loading
