Northern Basin Aboriginal Nations

Northern Basin Aboriginal Nations Ltd (NBAN) is a not-for-profit company and peak body that represents, advocates for and empowers First Nations in water management, in the northern Murray-Darling Basin. Since 2009, through the cultural authority of its member Nations, NBAN has been providing strategic advice on First Nations’ water rights and interests, and delivering and partnering on projects, at a federal and state level, that fulfil its First Nations’ vision of “Keeping our water spirits and our connections alive”. NBAN is dedicated to improving its Nations’ spiritual, cultural, environmental, social and economic conditions.

NBAN’s Nations, through their self-determined governance structures, appoint two persons to each be Delegate Members of the company. Through this process, each Nation accords NBAN with the cultural authority to speak on behalf of the First Nations of the northern Murray-Darling Basin. NBAN currently has 36 active Delegates.

NBAN is seeking applications from people with relevant experience to fill the role of a Projects and Policy Officer (PPO). The PPO will be responsible for coordinating culturally-appropriate engagement, developing and implementing policy and strategies that recognise First Nation water rights and interests, and carrying out project activities, all in line with project funding requirements. While the PPO will primarily be responsible for assisting the NSW Department of Planning, Industry & Environment – Water (NSW DPIE Water), the PPO will also work with NBAN’s membership to deliver project activities on Country, funded by other state and federal departments. The PPO will be expected to travel throughout the northern Murray-Darling Basin, for engagement and project activities. NBAN maintains a small office in Toowoomba, Queensland, with three full-time staff members, supported by an active Board. The PPO will report to the Executive Officer.
