Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre in Melbourne’s West near the popular Altona Beach, is looking for an experienced and passionate Manager who will make a difference to our community.

Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre

The Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre is a community owned and operated not for profit organisation located in the heart of Altona. The Centre develops and delivers diverse community arts and wellbeing programs and services.

This is a special organisational delivery model for the local area as a community-owned Co-operative. The Hobsons Bay Community Advancement Co-operative (HBCAC) trades as the Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre and needs an experienced candidate to help it thrive and help shape its future in line with the boards strategic plan.

Opened in 2005, the Centre has had significant growth in program delivery and community arts programming through the Joel Gallery. The Centre is entering into a new phase of growth over the next decade as the volunteer-based board of governance seeks to expand the provision of service delivery across all activities.

About the role

As the Manager of a growing Centre, you are responsible to the Board for the operational, financial, community and development outcomes of the Centre while leading a small team.

Responsibilities will include:

  1. Sustainable Program Development: Develop an annual community arts & culture program and a wellbeing program.
  2. Operational Leadership: Provide leadership to employees and volunteers, maintain the day to day operations of the centre and managing tenants, rentals, venue hire and identification of new growth opportunities.
  3. Community Development: Encourage and resource community and individual initiatives consistent with the strategic plan.
  4. Reporting and Accountability: Develop and maintain an effective working relationship with the Board of Management and deliver to the outcomes and directions provided.
  5. Networks, Partnerships and Relationships: Build strong and effective relationships and networks within the municipality, Council and funding bodies. Seek opportunities for grants, fee for service opportunities and partnerships to ensure sustainability and growth.
  6. Financial Management: contribute and manage to a budget and the centres financial processes. Manage and generate revenue growth through the acquisition of grants, sponsorship's, and maximise the utilisation of the Centre’s activity rooms.

This fulfilling full time contract role is for a 2-year term with the option for further extension by the board. Reporting to the Chairperson of the HBCAC, this role requires a flexible working environment and requires occasional weekend and evening work with time in lieu agreements.

About you

The successful candidate will be able to ensure the Centre, partnerships and programs meet the changing needs of the local community and will have suitable tertiary qualification in Community Development, Arts & Culture management or a relevant field, along with relevant expertise in arts & culture management and community development roles with a minimum 5 years’ experience.

You will also have:

  • Demonstrated experience in community development principles, practices and the Neighbourhood Houses Coordination Program (NHCP)
  • Proven managerial experience in financial and management procedures within a not-for-profit community-based organisation.
  • Experience in working effectively with diverse groups and with a broad range of community partners and stakeholders including a Board of Management.
  • Well-developed community development skills including community arts and wellbeing program design, coordination and evaluation.
