The Role

The Director of Legal Practice will lead the legal service and a team of approx. 15 lawyers who provide telephone legal advice services to consumers and community workers and who conduct advocacy and strategic litigation including in higher courts.

Specifically you will:

  • Lead a hybrid team of lawyers with broad legal skills and experience
  • Oversee and guide the special counsel with high court litigation
  • Provide expert advice on consumer, credit and civil legal matters
  • Support the provision of a holistic service model for vulnerable clients
  • Pro-actively connect case-work with advocacy opportunities
  • Use a reflect and learn approach to innovate the service model

Skills Required

You will be a qualified, experienced practice leader with, or with the ability to get a principal practising certificate. You will have managed legal teams and will have substantial experience in the conduct of litigation and dispute resolution. You will have demonstrated a commitment to social justice.

You will also have:

  • Experience in, or an ability to develop knowledge of broad consumer law practice
  • Awareness of how strategic casework and litigation effects legal reform
  • Experience working with disadvantaged and vulnerable client groups
  • An understanding of and commitment to cultural competency
  • A pro-active, collaborative and holistic approach to creating impact
  • Proven ability monitoring, evaluating and innovating programs/services
