Radio Coordinator / Trainer - Wingellina

Ngaanyatjarra Media Aboriginal Corporation

This is a highly unique and rewarding role, in which you'll coordinate the day-to-day production and programming of Radio NGM — a network of remote Indigenous community radio stations — and work to improve the rate and quality of community member participation, through training, networking and capacity building.

While you'll be provided with housing in Wingellina, the role will involve travelling extensively and working closely with communities throughout the region, to deliver radio training and support. Your ultimate goal will be to improve the scope and quality of current radio content, as well as recruit and train new presenters and media workers in the technical and communication skills needed to broadcast their own voice and stories to the region.

More specifically, some of your key deliverables will involve ensuring:

  • Radio NGM's 24/7 program schedule is maintained
  • At least 25 hours or more of live broadcast is achieved each week
  • Daily and annual broadcasts targets for National Indigenous News and community service announcements are met
  • Training is delivered to staff and students of the 9 Ngaanyatjarra Lands schools, enabling them to broadcast two items per term
  • Applications are made for relevant funding and grants

Your time will be split between maintaining and improving Radio NGM's content and scheduling, and imparting industry knowledge and skills to communities, through workshops and hands-on training. Opportunity exists for many of the shows produced to be played nationally through the ABC and other broadcasters, making this a fantastic opportunity to cement your radio production and coordination experience and your longer term media career.

Reporting to the General Manager, this position is offered on a 12 month contract basis (with option to renew subject to funding), and includes a 3 month probation period.

Remuneration details:

  • Starting @ ~AU$65,000 / year + 12.5% superannuation + salary packaging perks + $4133 remote allowance + $1275 annual payment towards travel expenses
  • Includes 4+ weeks additional leave per year and free accommodation and utilities. (Ideal if you'd like to save some money as your only substantial costs are food)

About You

To be successful in this highly diverse and career-defining role, you'll need demonstrated skills in radio production and presenting, as well as the ability to effectively lead and train others. You'll have solid knowledge of radio production and broadcasting, studio equipment set-up / operation and relevant software applications, as well as an understanding of community broadcasting codes of practice. Given the daily need to connect remote broadcasters to the hub radio station, the ability to learn and use Tieline codec equipment is also vital. Experience in community radio will be highly regarded, as will qualifications in Training & Assessment.

Given the role's focus, it's essential that you're able to manage projects and develop and deliver culturally appropriate training in radio content production and technical skills. You'll be liaising extensively with local community representatives to identify opportunities for new and expanded content or participation; therefore, you will require well developed management skills, including strong planning, reporting and organisational skills, and effective problem-solving, conflict resolution and team building abilities.

Ngaanyatjarra Media is looking for a patient, mature person with a high standard of personal and professional conduct, with highly developed written and oral communication skills, including the ability to prepare funding submissions. You'll be ready to work with traditional indigenous people in a dry remote community and have the ability to effectively communicate with diverse groups, from Yarnangu communities, staff and management, government and other non-Yarnangu agencies. Previous experience working with Indigenous people and in communities will be highly beneficial.

In this role, it will be beneficial to have a demonstrated understanding of the political, social and economic factors that affect Indigenous people. Candidates should have an understanding of the challenges of living and working in a cross-cultural environment in a remote location, be prepared to embrace them personally, and all applicants require a current manual driver's licence and a high level of physical fitness. Although not essential, 4WD off-road driving experience is strongly desired.

This is a unique opportunity for a highly adaptable radio professional with a great deal of self-reliance and an open, collaborative training style. You will work with a close-knit team of dedicated media practitioners and trainers while living in a spectacular and challenging region of Australia.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are encouraged to apply.
