General Manager

Word Travels trains and hires diverse people to perform their writing for in-person and digital audiences. We also create literary and literacy programs for festivals, private companies, libraries, schools and cultural institutions around the Asia Pacific.

We are very a special, unique and socially impactful organisation, and we are now excited to be recruiting a General Manager to assist us reach new horizons.

A day in the life of our GM…

After getting the 4 year strat plan approved, you will search under a table to restart the modem and then lunch with several Consulate Generals. After canapes, you submit a substantial budget to Create NSW, order more books before the next event, put the final apostrophe on the Board papers and then zoom with an education organisation in Mumbai before closing the laptop and getting ready for the next day.

Purpose of the Role

The role is key to the successful delivery of our core activities including Australian Poetry Slam, Story Week, Multilingual Poetry Slam, APS Youth, and Bespoke Literary Projects and you would lead the administrative, financial and governance aspects of Word Travels’ Strategic Plan.

You would also join our Creative Director/Founder and our team as a passionate advocate for diverse performing writers across Australia and the Asia Pacific.

This is a hands-on leadership role and focuses on day-to-day business operations, marketing, communications, finances, IT, HR, contract management, reporting and compliance. The role also offers administrative, governance and secretariat support to the Board and leads a small and profoundly passionate and purpose driven team.

Your DNA

You will have exemplary communication and organisational skills with a successful track record in operational management and building positive and dynamic work environments, preferably in the performing arts sector, community cultural development or the broader NFP Sector would be ideal.

In this role you would report to the Board which includes the Creative Director / Founder and previous experience on a Board, or reporting to a Board for a purpose driven organisation would be beneficial.
