Peer Support Workers are integral members of the team and draw on their lived experience of recovery from mental illness, to instil confidence and hope in others about the journey of recovery. You must have a lived experience of your own mental illness and a rich understanding of your own processes of recovery. You must be willing to purposefully use your own story to help others further their own understanding of recovery.

About the Service:

Penrith Head to Health is a new service that will offer a welcoming, safe and inclusive way to support community mental health and wellbeing. The service will provide access to short to medium term mental health and wellbeing support and help people navigate and access local services.

As one of the eight new Adult Mental Health centres funded by the Australian Government, Penrith Head to Health embeds lived experience into the service model. We are recruiting a team of Peer Support Workers to play an integral role in the service experience.

We are seeking people to instil confidence and hope in others about the journey of recovery, utilising their lived experience of recovery from mental illness, mental health crisis, suicidal crisis or caring for someone living with a mental illness or experiencing a suicidal crisis.

You must have a lived experience of your own mental illness/suicidal crisis/caring role, and a rich understanding of the processes of recovery. You must be willing to purposefully use your own story to help others further their own understanding of recovery.

With the service opening in December 2021, Penrith Head to Health is in its establishment phase. We have completed a community co-design process and the building fit-out in progress. This current recruitment round is to establish the inaugural team for this important service for the Nepean Blue Mountains region.

There will be five key functions of the centre that all forward-facing roles will work across:

  1. Front of house welcome with a concierge-type approach
  2. Initial assessment for needs
  3. Stabilisation support
  4. System navigator function & advocacy
  5. Follow up

These core components will be undertaken across the centre on a rotating roster basis. As a Peer Support Worker, being able to work across all five functions will ensure that people accessing the centre transition across less people, tell their story fewer times and get consistency of support from the same person who greeted them.

What are we looking for?

  • Lived experience of your own mental illness and a rich understanding of your own processes of recovery
  • A Peer Work qualification of Certificate IV level or above, or complete such a qualification within 2 years of your commencement of employment

  • A willingness to purposefully use your own story to help others further their own understanding of recovery
  • Experience of the public or private mental health system
  • Ability to foster and maintain respectful, professional relationships with consumers, staff and organisations

Please note, you must have an appropriate length of time in recovery to be able to effectively and safely conduct the PSW role, and a willingness to continue to engage in recovery supports where appropriate.
