About the Role

  • Casual and Part Time (0.5FTE – 0.9FTE) positions available, Maximum Term contract until 30 June 2024 subject to continued Government funding
  • Location: Urgent Mental Health Care Centre - Adelaide CBD
  • Hours 24/7 Rotating Roster; CSD Level 2 $64,363 - $69,031 (pro rata)

The Urgent Mental Health Care Centre (UMHCC) is an exciting service which provides South Australian’s an alternative service to attend when experiencing mental health crisis. The UMHCC is a first of its kind service in Australia and is based on our formal partner, RI International’s (RII) “Crisis Now” movement and their international leading lived experience, high engagement, multi-disciplinary crisis model offering an alternative to Emergency Department presentations.

UMHCC is moving to a 24/7 Rotating Roster therefore your hours of work will be in accordance with a 7 day per week rotating roster which may include a variety of shifts ranging from morning, afternoon, evening, active overnight and recalls depending on service operational requirements.

About the role

Peer Support Workers draw on their lived experience of recovery from mental illness, mental health crisis or caring for someone living with a mental illness to instil confidence and hope in others about the journey of recovery. Peer Support Workers are an important element of the team approach and bring the wisdom of experience to many aspects of service delivery including intake interviews, service promotion, partnership work and case reviews.

You will work alongside a multi-disciplinary team inclusive of mental health clinicians, mental health registered nurses and nurse practitioners, medical officers and consultant psychiatrists. Peer Support Workers will support a high engagement model of care, through actively greeting and supporting consumers throughout their time at the UMHCC.

Peer Support Workers have access to a tailored training program and to regular professional development sessions.

Core duties

  • Work to the principles that underpin the Collaborative Recovery Model (CRM)
  • Engage guests (consumers) and develop trusting and professional relationships
  • Work closely with UMHCC team members in order to deliver the best possible comprehensive service to guests
  • Work within a holistic framework taking into account the needs of consumers, family, carers and other members of the community and provide culturally appropriate service responses

What are we looking for?

  • Lived experience of your own mental illness, mental health crisis or caring for someone living with a mental illness
  • A rich understanding of your own processes of recovery
  • A willingness to purposefully use your own story to help others further their own understanding of recovery
  • Experience as a consumer/carer of the public or private mental health system
  • Ability to be flexible and to adapt and respond to change
  • Ability to foster and maintain respectful, professional relationships with guests, staff and organisations
  • You must have an appropriate length of time in recovery to be able to effectively and safely conduct the peer support worker role, and a willingness to continue to engage in recovery supports where appropriate.

Mandatory requirements:

  • It is a requirement of the Peer Support Worker position that you hold, and provide Neami evidence of, a Mental Health (or equivalent Human Services, Community Services) qualification of Certificate IV level or above, or complete such a qualification within 2 years of your commencement of employment.
  • Current Working with Children Check and Vulnerable Person Check
  • Police check (refer to PD) – disclosable outcomes considered
  • Adhere to UMHCC immunisation policy
