Natural Carbon develops carbon farming projects in Australia, with expertise in Savanna Burning and Beef Cattle Herd Management Projects in northern Australia. Established as an independent business in 2014 by EcoFutures, Climate Friendly, South Pole, McCullough Robertson and Object Consulting, Natural Carbon brings together global experience and expertise across the full carbon project cycle.

As advisors and agents, we help indigenous groups, farmers, graziers and others to navigate the carbon markets to “unlock sustainable agriculture and carbon transformations through scalable land management whose benefits prioritise indigenous prosperity, empowerment, food security and resilient communities.".

Natural Carbon is in a growth & consolidation phase, with a target to grow the project portfolio in Savanna Burning and Herd Management Carbon Farming Projects, but also to service our existing clients better and demonstrate our commitment to best practice.

The Role

Reporting to the General Manager, the Compliance Officer will consolidate Natural Carbon’s operating documentation to a ‘Best Practice’ standard.

The Compliance Officer assists Natural Carbon by maintaining the quality of our services even as the company goes through a period of transition and growth in the savanna burning and herd management project market.

The role will require an outstanding process-oriented mind with great eye for detail and good business sense.

  • Development and/or review, finalisation and submission for approval of all policies, SOPs, process flows, technical guidelines, systems, templates and training materials Develop and implement Natural Carbon’s compliance tools
  • An initial 3-month contract with a view to extension and expansion into a broader role as Compliance Manager
  • Brisbane or Sydney
  • Available to travel nationally.
  • Competitive based salary in line with level of experience.

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • A minimum 2-5 years’ experience developing and maintaining governance systems for company operations including project compliance, contract management and risk (experience with carbon projects preferred).
  • Tertiary qualification in Compliance and Risk Management.
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation including Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Act) 2011 and Native Title Act 1993
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Desirable

  • Indigenous and Torres Strait applicants are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Experience working with Indigenous stakeholders, including negotiating native title agreements
  • Background in environmental auditing, policy or law highly desirable.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, to solve problems, prioritise workload and provide advice to manager.

Experience with carbon market projects. Previous experience specifically related to the Emissions Reduction Fund and Carbon Farming Initiative is highly desirable.

You

The position would suit an auditor, compliance officer, contract manager or lawyer with 2-5 years’ experience, preferably with some commercial experience and first-hand experience of carbon projects.

You possess relevant tertiary qualifications in Compliance and Risk Management, with a background in law, science, agriculture or management.

You ideally have professional work experience in the carbon offset project cycle either as a project developer, auditor, regulator or consultant, with strong working knowledge of relevant legislation.

You will have experience managing compliance systems for small to medium companies and preference will be given to candidates with direct experience in the Emissions Reduction Fund, Savanna Fire Management Methodology, Beef Cattle Herd Management Methodology and Indigenous consultation.
