Victorian Clinical Genetics Services (VCGS) is a not-for-profit subsidiary of the Murdoch Children's Research Institute and provides a wholly integrated genetic testing, diagnostic and counselling service for health professionals, patients and their families across Victoria, Australia and globally. Our clinical geneticists and genetic counsellors work in close consultation with our medical scientists to provide the most accurate interpretation for complex genetic tests. VCGS also plays a pivotal role in research and development, driving translational research and policy development in the field of genetics.

Your Opportunity:

The Software Engineer will join our Clinical Bioinformatics Unit to develop key infrastructure to streamline sharing of genomic data from VCGS to MCRI researchers as well as other third parties such as the Melbourne Genomics Health Alliance. They will work with the Head of Clinical Bioinformatics, the VCGS Data Officer and other stakeholders to define requirements, identify technical solutions and implement these into the infrastructure at VCGS and MCRI. This work will involve both front end (web development) and middle tier / back end work such as designing database tables and implementing APIs to manipulate data. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in an exciting scientific field at one of the world’s leading genetic testing laboratories and gain significant experience in the domain of modern genomic technology and healthcare.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • A passion for the value of genomics and creating life changing outcomes for patients.
  • Assist to develop and understand requirements for delivery.
  • Developing web interfaces to support entry, validation and processing of Genomic Data Sharing requests.
  • Implementing middle tier solutions to validate results sent by front end code and persist these in database tables.
  • Developing data workflows to asynchronously transfer data, perform quality control checks and integrate results of transfers to API calls.
  • Working with MCRI IT to integrate with MCRI identity management solutions (eg: Okta / OAuth) and ensure that solutions generally comply with MCRI policies and practices.
  • Implementing process tracking systems to ensure that data transfer progress is visible to recipients and they can be notified about progress through the process of data sharing.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • At least 2 years experience in one or more software engineering roles.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles such as object oriented programming, functional programming, encapsulation, separation of concerns.
  • Familiarity with container based development and deployment, including “infrastructure-as-code” based approaches to software delivery and deployment.
  • Understanding of relational database technologies including SQL and sound schema design principles.
  • Knowledge of web technologies (Javascript, HTML, web services, APIs, authentication/security).
  • Knowledge / experience with one or more server side languages (Python, Java, Scala, Kotlin, Groovy, Clojure etc).
  • Demonstrated appetite to further learning to acquire knowledge in areas of knowledge gaps.
  • Familiarity with message queuing and message routing technologies.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with concepts of genomics and / or related biology.
  • Experience or familiarity with working in a scientific domain.
  • Experience or familiarity in working in an accredited setting (eg: NATA).
  • Experience/knowledge/understanding of Django and related ecosystem of middle tier technologies, or a closely comparable framework.
  • Experience with modern component based front end technologies for web development (React, Vue, Angular)
  • Experience and / or knowledge of cloud computing.
