Victorian Clinical Genetics Services (VCGS)

VCGS is a not-for-profit subsidiary of the Murdoch Children's Research Institute www.mcri.edu.au and provides a wholly integrated genetic testing, diagnostic and counselling service for health professionals, patients and their families across Victoria, Australia and globally. Our clinical geneticists and genetic counsellors work in close consultation with our medical scientists to provide the most accurate interpretation for complex genetic tests. The Opportunity at VCGS:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior DevOps Engineer to join the Software Systems and Integration Unit at VCGS. This role will provide expertise in creating a stable and extensible local infrastructure to contain the various applications, APIs, data pipelines and data stores supporting VCGS service delivery. You will closely with application analysts, software developers, customer care and business development to ensure solutions are developed that are fit for purpose and integrate well with existing systems.

The Senior DevOps Engineer gathers and refines specifications and requirements based on technical needs and becomes involved with all relevant infrastructure design, automation and rollout work. You are responsible for creating, maintaining and ensuring that all documentation is made available. You will also ensure a high level of infrastructure-as-code software quality, and champion the adoption of best practices, both in terms of DevOps/Cloud practices but also software development practices, as well as tools and technologies of choice.

Our ideal candidate will possess a high level of professionalism and be confident working closely with team members, the Lead of the Unit and the heads of the business units to ensure a full understanding of the operational, strategic and management context and consequences associated with software development projects. You will be a key contributor of the team’s day-to-day processes and ritual and enjoy mentoring more junior members of the team, regarding technical skills as well as project management ones.

Your Responsibilities will include:

Technical infrastructure

  • Setting up a stable and extensible local Docker-based infrastructure.
  • Ensuring the observability of the platform: administration, centralised logging, monitoring, and alerting, dashboards.
  • Ensuring the scalability and robustness of the platform: high-availability, redundancy, auto-scaling, disaster recovery.

Software Development

  • Developing infrastructure-as-code scripts to deploy and maintain the platform.
  • Applying and promoting best practice software development methodologies to develop robust and scalable solutions.
  • Showing initiative by identifying and designing solutions to improve the existing infrastructure and applications.

About You:

  • A tertiary qualification in BA / Honours / master’s in computer science, software engineering, information technology or related discipline plus an appropriate level of expertise gained from a combination of experience, training or professional accreditation.
  • Extensive experience developing and maintaining infrastructure, applications, and web services.
  • Extensive experience with containers (particularly Docker).
  • Extensive experience with container orchestration (e.g. Kubernetes, Docker Swarm).
