We're looking for committed and empathetic Counsellors who will make our clients feel safe and empowered as soon as they speak with you. Your purpose will be to help provide our clients with decision-based counselling and support when they require throughout their journey with us.

About us

We are an independent, non-profit organisation dedicated to ensuring sexual and reproductive health services are equally accessible to all people living in Australia. Marie Stopes Australia is the only national accredited provider of abortion, contraception and vasectomy services, and the country’s longest running provider of teleabortion. Our holistic, client-centred approach empowers individuals to control their reproductive health safely, and with dignity, regardless of their circumstances. Through active partnerships with healthcare providers, researchers and communities, our models of care ensure the total wellbeing of our clients is supported at every stage.

Your purpose

  • Providing decision and support based counselling for women and their support persons
  • Providing counselling services for those who have had a termination and require independent support
  • Supporting the counselling team to ensure relevant tools and knowledge base is shared within the team
  • Liaising and referring clients to external psycho-social services
  • Involvement in maintaining and developing quality improvement initiatives in the counselling service
  • Responsible for the management and recording of notes
  • Firm understanding of associated legislation in Social Work/Counselling
  • Ensuring all appointments are attended to on time and follow up occurs where required
  • Knowledge and understanding of external community agency support systems

What we need:

  • A Pro-Choice Advocate
  • 3 years + professional counselling experience
  • Qualification in Social Work
  • An understanding of and commitment to the social model of human-rights and feminist based frameworks
  • Experience providing women centred counselling
  • Extensive experience in case management
  • An ability to work autonomously and unsupervised
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Willingness to learn with a non-judgmental attitude
  • Membership with AASW
  • Medicare provider eligibility
  • Commitment to continual professional development
  • Demonstrated ability to advocate on behalf of the client in accordance with organisational goals
  • Excellent computer skills

What we'd like to see (but aren't essential):

  • Previous experience in women's reproductive health, pregnancy-care, family violence or similar environments
  • Knowledge of trauma, attachment and decision-based frameworks
