Water and Sanitation Manager

Médecins Sans Frontières Australia

Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is an international, independent medical humanitarian organisation delivering emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, and exclusion from healthcare. We operate in over 70 countries and depend on skilled technical experts to maintain safe water and sanitation in the communities we serve.

We are currently seeking to build our pool of experienced Water and Sanitation experts available for overseas assignments.

As a Water and Sanitation Manager with MSF you will:

  • Conduct WaSH assessments to identify needs and recommend appropriate response activities to project coordination teams.
  • Operate and maintain essential infrastructure — tube wells, water distribution networks, latrines, fecal sludge treatment systems, and water quality monitoring.
  • Manage and mentor local and international field staff, building team capacity through ongoing training and technical guidance.
  • Engage with local authorities, community leaders, government officials, and other humanitarian actors to ensure coordinated and effective delivery.
  • Collect, monitor, and report on WaSH data, providing regular analysis to line management and contributing to project planning.

Essential Criteria

  • Degree in engineering, environmental science, or an equivalent technical qualification.
  • Minimum three years professional and hands-on experience in water and sanitation (e.g. water, hygiene, waste management, sanitation, vector control, building wells and boreholes).
  • Experience supervising or managing multidisciplinary field teams in a complex or resource-constrained environment.
  • Personal qualities include adaptability, resilience, and a genuine commitment to humanitarian principles. Ability to work in demanding, unpredictable field environments.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in water filtration techniques.
  • Experience of water and sanitation in emergency or development contexts.
  • Public health background, environmental or healthcare sanitation experience.
  • French language skills (B2 or higher) a strong advantage.
