The Western Sydney Community Legal Centre (WSCLC) is a not-for-profit, government funded community legal centre offering a range of legal and social services to assist the community of Western Sydney. WSCLC shares a commitment to social justice and serving the diverse community of Western Sydney. We prioritise assisting a range of disadvantaged groups, including members of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, young people, victims of domestic violence, elderly people and members of culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
Our Community Legal Centre Program is seeking a passionate and motivated solicitor to join our team to begin a new project dedicated to increasing access to justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This is a 12-month role where the successful candidate would design an outreach program that partners with key community organisations and our Aboriginal Legal Access Program (ALAP) to deliver legal services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients in our catchment.
Key Responsibilities include:
All aspects of legal service provision including advice and representations
Managing your file load autonomously
Building and maintaining relationships with other legal and non-legal providers
Participation in community legal education events and programs
There is ample opportunity to pitch new ideas and participate in regular training and development. As our Centre grows, we are seeking new talent to expand our service deliverables and add value to our service.
As part of the team, you would provide a range of legal services. The ideal candidate will be passionate about social justice, experienced in civil and criminal law, and committed to serving the community.
Selection Criteria:
Qualified to practice as a solicitor in NSW and holds a current practicing certificate.
Entered on the Register of Practitioners in the High Court.
Two years post-admission legal experience.
Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Superior oral and written communication, conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
Ability to work autonomously, manage and organise your workload and meet deadlines.
Understanding of and commitment to the work of Community Legal Centres and demonstrated understanding of barriers to justice facing disadvantaged groups.
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement legal service delivery projects.
Sound computer skills.
A current Working with Children Check or willingness to attain same.
