  • Make a meaningful difference to the lives of Australians in need

About Us

Mission Australia is a non-denominational Christian charity that has been helping vulnerable Australians move towards independence for more than 160 years.

Every day we support people nationwide by combatting homelessness, assisting disadvantaged families and children, addressing mental health issues, fighting substance dependencies and much more. We are generously supported by our funders, partners and tens of thousands of everyday Australians, who make the work of our tireless volunteers and staff possible.

Mission Australia is committed to keeping children and young people safe with zero tolerance of harm or abuse, and expect all our employees and volunteers to reflect this commitment.

Your Opportunity

The aim of this service on Mornington Island is to provide safe places for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island children and young people who have entered the statutory child protection system, enabling them to remain in their community; or to facilitate reunification with family or kin for children and young people from Mornington Island who have previously been removed from the Island. The service also provides family intervention services (FIS) and support to local foster and kingship carers.

We currently have a full time (38 hours per week) permanent vacancy for a Program Manager – overseeing and managing the residential facility and supporting a team of ten.

Your passion to make a difference along with your superior experience in team management will make you an ideal candidate for this role.  You will be comfortable overseeing a service, including the financial, administrative and reporting functions.

Duties will include:

  • Ensuring program delivery is client-focused, effective and in line with contractual agreements
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Leadership and management of a team to ensure positive outcomes and successful results
  • Financial Management and administration; regular reporting and completion of case information

Requirements for Success

With an already established career in the child, youth and family sector you will have familiarity in a management role, and some of the skills and capabilities you bring will include:

  • Considerable experience working with Aboriginal communities in remote and rural regions, with an in-depth understanding and respect for the culture
  • A background in child protection, youth work or out of home care with demonstrable knowledge of residential services
  • Ability to provide guidance and mentoring to a team with differing levels of experience and dedication to increasing their capacity and professional development

  • Dedication to engaging and establishing relationships with community organisations including local Indigenous groups and elders
  • Top level communication skills and the ability to establish and build rapport with a range of stakeholders
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills; able to work to deadlines effectively

Holding a relevant tertiary qualification would be beneficial, however your experience in, and commitment to, improving the lives of Aboriginal children and helping them to reconnect with country, culture and community is the most important aspect of this role. You will be required to have a current Working with Children Blue Card and Queensland Driver Licence.

Before starting work with us, you will be required to undertake a National Police History Check, Qualifications and Reference Checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
