About the role

Mind’s Equality Centre’s provides support individuals, couples and families from the LGBTIQA+ community to live well and improve mental health outcomes. Services are tailored and utilise a range of psychological interventions including brief therapies, motivational techniques and specialist skills. The After Care program delivers peer-based psychological support and group work to LGBTIQA+ people with mental ill health, this peer-driven approach integrates evidence-based practice with community insights to provide a holistic, innovative model of care.

We are seeking several motivated, compassionate After Care Suicide Prevention - Peer Practitioners for permanent, part time (23 or 30 hours per week) opportunities at the Equality Centre in Fitzroy North. You will utilise lived experience to deliver 1:1 weekly sessions with clients following a suicidal crisis and provide high quality, safe recovery-orientated services consistent with Mind’s My Better Life model.

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilise your own lived experience of mental ill health recovery and experience of LGBTIQA+ specific issues and community to inform your work and the work of the team.
  • Support clients with your unique lens of lived experience to empower, bring hope and aid recovery.
  • Work with clients following a suicide attempt or with suicidal ideation with management of referrals, assertive follow up and recovery-focused services.
  • Work collaboratively with a range of services and the community to ensure a co-ordinated and integrated response to the client’s recovery goals.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) in Mental Health, Psychology, Social Work or other health-related field.
  • Lived experience of mental ill health and/or suicide and experience of LGBTIQA+ specific issues with the willingness to inform your work.
  • Expertise in working with people from LGBTIQA+ community, mental health issues, complex needs, and collaborating with families and carers.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Community Services sector and ability to build strong relationships with agencies, clinical providers and key stakeholders.
