About the role

The Aftercare service offers a safe place of psychological healing and holistic support for people from the LGBTIQ+ community who are having thoughts or intentions of suicide and experiencing mental health challenges at no cost. Aftercare delivers short-term, peer-based recovery-focused outreach, counselling and therapeutic services to support clients, families, carers and loved ones move forward with a life of meaning and purpose. The service works collaboratively with clients providing warm, affirming care, tailored supports and clinical interventions and addresses contributing factors to LGBTIQA+ suicide through support coordination, community advocacy, access to service providers, meaningful referrals and ongoing supports to achieve recovery and wellbeing goals.

We are seeking a highly motivated, compassionate LGBTIQA+ Therapist - Allied Health Clinician for a 6 month fixed term, part time (30 hours per week) opportunity to work in the Abbotsford area. You will utilise your training and experience to deliver brief therapeutic interventions, assessments, and care coordination. The role will provide quality therapeutic and mental health interventions including a strengths-based approach to support to LGBTIQA+ community.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive and flexible therapeutic support service to community members and their family/carers including brief intervention, and treatment planning and evaluation.
  • Utilise your own lived experience of mental ill health and understanding of LGBTIQA+ issues and suicidal crises to inform your work.
  • Engage in consultation with and referral to internal and external support services for community members.
  • Apply professional judgement to complex cases and adapt therapeutic practice to best support community members with complex care needs.
  • Collaborate with a range of services and the community to ensure a co-ordinated, integrated response to client’s recovery goals.

What you’ll bring

  • Master’s degree qualification in Psychology, Counselling, Social Work or other mental health related field as designated by Mind. Full registration with AHPRA, ACA, PACFA or AASW.
  • Expertise in working with LGBTIQA+ people with mental health issues, suicidal ideations, complex needs and collaborating with families and carers.
  • Ability to deliver person-centred support coordination services in line with client’s defined goals and aspirations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the LGBTIQA+ community, Community Services sector and capacity to build strong relationships with service providers, clinical teams and key stakeholders.
  • Lived experience as a member of the LGBTIQA+ community and experiences of mental ill health and/or experiences with suicide.
  • Proven capability to implement therapeutic, recovery oriented frameworks and practices including harm reduction therapy, motivational interviewing, trauma informed care and family inclusive practice.
