ABOUT MERIDIAN

Meridian is Canberra’s leading LGBTIQ and HIV+ community organisation. Formerly the AIDS Action Council, Meridian was established in 1983 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and has a strong and proud history of working with and representing diverse groups of people. This includes gay and bisexual and other men who have sex with men, lesbian and queer women, transgender and gender diverse people, people with disability, sex workers, people who use drugs, and people in custodial settings. Over this time, we have learnt to be dynamic, intersectional, and progressive with our approach to tackling complex social health issues such as HIV/AIDS and the health and wellbeing of sexuality, sex and gender diverse people.

Our vision is to build strong, connected and supportive communities that are free of new HIV transmission, marginalisation, discrimination and stigma. We create opportunities for our communities to live their healthiest lives and be their true selves.

THE ROLE

As part of the HIV and Client Services team, the Health Promotion Officer plays a key role in contributing to the elimination of new HIV transmissions and improving sexual health in the community. Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Delivery of sexual health and HIV prevention and treatment health promotion campaigns using a sex positive approach
  • Delivery of health promotion activities including campaigns and off-site activations to increase awareness of HIV in the community
  • Contributing to the development of innovative health promotion resources and materials, including social media content
  • Providing information to a diverse range of stakeholders and individuals and meeting their individual needs using a variety of communication methods
  • Identifying opportunities for collaboration within the community

SKILLS REQUIRED

Applicants need to demonstrate:

  • Skills, knowledge and experience in health promotion and/or community development
  • Sound knowledge of HIV, blood borne viruses and sexually transmitted infections
  • Understanding of and commitment to supporting Meridian’s communities
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility and ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Capacity to network and build partnerships with a broad range of stakeholders
  • Strong time management and organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple and competing demands
