Mercy Connect, a project of Mercy Works Ltd, engages volunteers to provide support to refugee children in their school classrooms. Additionally, volunteers are required for homework clubs and school-holiday programs for children and also English language classes for refugee and migrant parents.

As a Mercy Connect volunteer mentor for refugee students, you can assist with their learning while at the same time help build their confidence and self-esteem.

You’ll play a role in overcoming racism in Australia and in breaking down cross-cultural barriers.

You’ll meet new people, share ideas and receive ongoing support from the Mercy Connect Coordinator, In-school Coordinator, teachers and other volunteers.

Each volunteer is assigned to work with an individual or small group of refugee students in a primary or secondary school in Sydney’s west and south west. There are also volunteering opportunities in an adult conversation classes or homework clubs attached to schools.

While previous experience in an educational setting is considered an advantage, volunteers from all backgrounds are most welcome and all new volunteers receive full training.

A volunteer can expect to be available 3 hours per week during the school day for the school year, 1.5 hours per week for homework support and up to 2 hours per week for English language tutoring to parents.
