The Opportunity

The Environmental Health team is seeking an Environmental Health Technical Officer to assist the team in proactively protecting public health within the City of Melton.

The successful applicant will play a key role in conducting inspections under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008, investigating complaints, managing onsite wastewater and assisting the Environmental Health Officer’s as required. The role will report to the Environmental Health Team Leader and will be leasing with both internal staff as well as residents and ratepayers, consultants, State Government Departments, Public Authorities and other Municipalities and Environmental Health Professionals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform the duties of an authorised officer under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008.
  • Maintain appropriate and up to date records of all assessments, inspections and daily work activities performed.
  • Investigate and resolve complaints.
  • Provide a high level of service to both internal and external customers.
  • Conduct Tobacco Act education visits and assist with the test purchasing program as required.
  • Process applications and conduct site visits relevant to on site wastewater management.
  • Contribute to the regular monitoring, testing and sampling of public swimming pools and spas as required.

About you

To be successful in this role you will have the following:

  • The ability to work in a team environment and gain cooperation and assistance from members of the public;
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present as a professional Council officer in external forums.
  • The ability to write reports and prepare external correspondence where required.
  • Investigation skills including collection of evidence such as interviews, photos and samples for analysis.
  • Work with minimal supervision and to seek advice and assistance from others when required.
  • Able to read, interpret and enforce legislative requirements.
  • Post-secondary qualifications in administration (below diploma level) with some experience in investigative work in a customer oriented position.
