The Living Learning Program:

The Living Learning program is an exciting new innovation for Melbourne City Mission (MCM) and the Hester Hornbrook Academy (the Academy). The program will initially run for five years.

Living Learning works with young people who are persistently not in employment, education or training (NEET), and who have a mental health condition. Through the supports offered by Living Learning (clinicians, key workers and specialist educators) the aim of the program is to re-engage young people into the Hester Hornbrook Academy, to stabilise their mental health and work with them over three years to achieve education outcomes and meet the objectives of the Victorian government’s Partnerships Addressing Disadvantage (PADs) program.

About the role:

The Learning Specialist will be a highly skilled classroom practitioner who will continue to spend time in the classroom conducting the educational needs assessment of students in the Living Learning program, ensuring the impacts of mental health are appropriately catered for and responded to in classroom practice and education support. They will assist staff with the delivering high-quality teaching and learning and have a range of responsibilities related to their expertise, including teaching demonstration lessons, observing and providing feedback to other educators and staff and facilitating school-based professional learning.

The Learning Specialist will have a deep knowledge and expertise in high quality teaching and learning in delivering improved achievement, engagement and wellbeing for students in the area of Numeracy.

As the Living Learning Specialist, you can expect to:

  • Ensure all Living Learning students are receiving the best possible educational practice in order to remain engaged and productive
  • Ensure education staff are collaborating and working well with other staff of Living Learning and relevant partners
  • Demonstrate high-level expertise in the teaching and learning practice related to, numeracy and student educational needs assessments
  • Work with the leadership team to develop a shared view of highly effective teach practice for students with mental health complexities

Who should apply?

A motivated and collaborative individual with extensive experience in working with disengaged young people in the education and training sector. Fully qualified with a Bachelor of Education or related discipline and current full Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration.

Experience and/or qualifications in a mental health or wider health context will be highly regarded.
