About the program:

The Lead Tenant program is a supported accommodation program that is part of the Community Integration Accommodation and Options (CIAO) team.

The aim of the program is to provide an opportunity to young people who are age between 15 to 18 years old and unable to live with family to develop the essential independent living skills necessary to transition to leaving care in a safe, stable and supported environment.

  • Additional related trainings can be explored with the lead tenant coordinator
  • Every young person referred to the lead tenant program has a designated caseworker who provides support with accommodation, advocacy, education and training
  • The financial benefits of being able to live rent and utility free

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • To reside in a household with potentially one other lead tenant volunteer and support young people who may present with challenging and complex issues
  • To act in the best interest of the young people and monitor their safety and wellbeing and provide feedback to the case workers.
  • To provide positive role modelling and mentoring for young people and assist them in developing interpersonal skills, healthier relationships and lifestyle choices through positive reinforcement of acceptable behaviours and standards.
  • To support the young people in the allocation and sharing of household tasks with the goal of developing their skill sets and sense of responsibility in the importance of household maintenance.
  • To attend monthly supervision with the lead tenant coordinator.
  • To contact Oncall staff for afterhours incidences for additional support and emergency services if required.

Selection Criteria:

  • We recruit lead tenant volunteers from all walks of life ranging from working professionals to tertiary students with the requirement that they have a passion for social justice and are eager on wanting to make a difference in young people’s lives.
  • Ability to build a strong rapport with the young people and engage with them consistently utilizing a strength base approach.
  • Respect and maintain the confidentially and privacy of the young people.
  • Communicate effectively with allocated caseworkers, lead tenant coordinator and young people in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • To ensure that the policies and procedures of Melbourne City Mission and the Lead Tenant Program guidelines are being adhered to as provided during orientation.
  • All lead tenant volunteers must have a current Working with Children and Police check prior to the undertaking of the role.
