The Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA) is the industrial and professional organisation representing the people who work in Australia’s media and entertainment industries. Its membership includes journalists, artists, photographers, performers, dancers, symphony orchestra musicians, freelance musicians, and film, television and performing arts technicians.

MEAA is seeking applications for a senior National Industrial Officer in Sydney or Melbourne.

The National Industrial Officer will negotiate with employers in media, theatre, film and television organisations, represent members in court and tribunals, and provide advice to members and internally to MEAA staff in collective and complex matters.

Qualifications

Legal qualifications and/or industrial relations qualifications or equivalent experience are necessary.

Key Selection Criteria

Essential requirements:

  • A commitment to trade union principles of social justice, equality, solidarity, and collective action
  • Interest and commitment to the rights of workers in the creative arts entertainment and media industries
  • Legal and/or industrial relations qualifications
  • Experience as an industrial or legal officer in a union or in a legal environment
  • Negotiation skills and ability to navigate competing interests to reach agreement
  • A thorough understanding of relevant state and federal industrial legislation and current industrial relations issues
  • Ability to use legal research skills to solve complex problems and to construct persuasive arguments
  • Ability to write fluently in a range of styles and formats
  • Able to use MS Office and Google G Suite applications

Desirable attributes:

  • Experience in appearing in the Fair Work Commission, Federal Circuit Court or Federal Court, or similar courts and tribunals
  • Experience negotiating collective agreements and providing advice in collective disputes
  • Knowledge of contemporary industrial relations issues
  • Knowledge of entertainment or copyright law and/or recorded media production

Details

The position is available on a full-time permanent or fixed term basis with a package dependent on skills and experience. Benefits include 10.5% employer contribution to superannuation, 5 weeks annual leave each year plus an additional 3 days leave between Christmas and New Year.
