The Opportunity

You will join our team of experts in software engineering and data science to design, deploy and operate software platforms for managing large scale genomics data. These include in-house developed state-of-the-art applications built with a modern tech stack and cloud based systems, designed to assist researchers and clinicians to understand the cause of severe undiagnosed genetic disorders. You will help to solve complex problems to enable hybrid on-premise and cloud based infrastructure and develop monitoring and management solutions for our big data systems and analysis workflows. You will also be working with the Centre for Population Genomics team developing petabyte-scale genomic data processing systems to solve some of the hardest problems in data science and genomics. By joining our team within one of Australia’s leading medical research institutes, you will grow and extend your existing skills in software engineering and cloud based infrastructure and gain exposure to the fascinating world of genetics, genomics, machine learning and big data.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Working closely with the Bioinformatics Methods team to design, implement and facilitate cloud based architectures for storing, processing and managing genomics data. We believe in "you build it, you run it" philosophy which means you will implement this from end-to-end from requirements elicitation, design, cutting-code, test to deployment. This will be done in an iterative fast-feedback style as our team is accustomed to.
  • Developing and integrating MCRI on-premise services, applications and infrastructure with cloud platforms.
  • Designing and developing software, infrastructure and platforms to maintain demanding needs for computational resources (cpu, memory, networking, storage) within budget and operational constraints
  • Developing and provisioning infrastructure to ensure software systems are easy to support and maintain.
  • Overseeing software systems and platforms’ ongoing maintenance activities to ensure they are secure, healthy and operationally efficient
  • Applying modern DevOps practices when developing software infrastructure solutions such as Infrastructure as Code
  • Working with MCRI IT and infrastructure team to ensure solutions are in harmony with overall institutional strategies
  • Working closely with the Software Lead and Group Head to foster a strong culture of ownership, agility and teamwork to deliver high quality software and deliver value to the organisation.

Selection Criteria

  • Tertiary academic qualifications or equivalent work experience in software engineering and/or related disciplines.
  • At least two years' experience in a software engineering, or comparable role or demonstrable equivalent experience (e.g.: through open-source contributions).
  • Knowledge of / familiarity with one or more ecosystems used for back end software development Python, bash scripting and / or JVM languages (Java, Groovy, Kotlin or Scala).
  • Knowledge of linux command line, including bash scripting.
  • Familiarity with web application development and related technologies (e.g.: Django, Flask, SpringBoot, Vue.js and / or React).
  • Knowledge in one or more cloud platforms (Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services and / or Azure) including their foundational services compute, networking, storage, costs & budgeting, IAM.
  • Knowledge of modern DevOps culture and practices including but not limited to CI/CD, repeatable deployments, infrastructure as code, infrastructure provisioning automation/administration/scripting, logging, health metrics and monitoring.
  • Software methodology tools such as version control (Git), documentation and management systems (e.g.: JIRA, Gitlab, etc).
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, both within and across teams to understand problems and negotiate effective outcomes.
  • Show passion for continuous learning.
  • Knowledge or experience with genomics, genetics and / or related fields desirable.
  • Knowledge or experience with open-source software development desirable.
  • Knowledge or experience with Kubernetes or other container orchestration technologies desirable.
