Your Opportunity:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the GenV team as an Aboriginal Engagement Officer! You’ll utilise your networking, communication and project management skills to lead and implement GenV’s Aboriginal engagement plan, which was written by GenV’s Aboriginal consultant Karen Milward, Yorta Yorta woman. GenV’s Aboriginal engagement is overseen by GenV’s Solutions Hub Co-Lead with oversight provided by GenV’s Aboriginal Advisory Group. The two objectives of this role are to build engagement with pregnant families who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander or families whose baby may identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (residing in Victoria), and, to build trust about GenV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities in Victoria. GenV aims to ensure the GenV’s cohort is representative of all Victorians including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander families.

This position will suit someone who has experience and is comfortable building networks and liaising with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. Your excellent project management skills will help ensure GenV can deliver on our program milestones. You may also be involved in designing and conducting qualitative research on the GenV Cohort. Occasional travel within Victoria may be required (when COVID safe to do so). The successful candidate will work directly with the Solutions Hub Co-lead and Solutions Hub team, have close working relationships with the Cohort and BioDiscovery team and GenV Scientific Directors, and other GenV teams as required. GenV will also support the successful candidate’s relationship with MCRI’s Aboriginal Health Program and other campus based Aboriginal networks. All our staff are also offered Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Training annually.

For this role, it is a genuine occupational requirement that the incumbent must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander as authorised under the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating GenV’s engagement activities with Victorian Aboriginal communities as per GenV’s Aboriginal Engagement Plan.
  • Facilitating and leading internal and external meetings/workshops with stakeholders with support and direction to achieve project outcomes. This may include GenV’s Aboriginal Advisory Group, Aboriginal Elders, Koori Maternity Service workers, Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officers, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCO’s) and Aboriginal researchers.
  • An ability to communicate with and be understood by diverse audiences including an ability to explain complex issues in simple manner.
  • Documenting engagement processes and outcomes.
  • Working with the Solutions Hub Co-lead to ensure GenV’s cohort is representative of the State and includes families and/or babies who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Managing competing priorities/deadlines to deliver tasks in a timely manner.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • An appropriate level of expertise gained from a combination of experience, training or professional accreditation.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with experience communicating to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish warm, constructive working relationships with co-workers and stakeholders through collaboration and networking.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community residing in Victoria, including key Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and structures.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management including the planning, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Excellent time management and multi-tasking skills with attention to detail.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (eg Teams, Outlook).
  • Ability to work independently while also working constructively within a team environment.

Desirable

  • High quality tertiary degree qualification in relevant field (eg public health, health, nursing/midwifery, social sciences, community development).
  • Experience conducting qualitative research with Aboriginal communities.
  • An interest in young children and their families demonstrated through research and/or post-graduate employment.
  • Experience and knowledge of public health.
